I may have an opportunity to go to Singapore this fall... has anyone here been? Is it a nice place to visit? What type of touristy things are there to do?

Thanks for any info!

I've never been there but it's definitely on my list of places to go. I've seen quite a few travel shows (Anthony Bourdain most recently) and the food looks like it's to die for. Go, go, go!

Singapore is a great place to visit.....we lived about 30 minutes away from there for close to two years, and went there all the time. It is a very clean city, and you dou do need to be careful about following the rules....they are very strict about things like littering. It can be a very multicultural city....but you need to get away from the main hotel area (around Orchard Road), to find those areas. You should definitely check out the Chinatown area, and the zoo is not to be missed. If you can, go to the zoo both during the day, and for the Night Safari. The shopping is great....but the prices are not really any cheaper than you would pay in the US. It can be an expensive place for food and hotels, so be prepared for that as well.

I know they just opened a nice Universal Studios park there, but don't know much else about it, other than, yes, they are very strict on certain things.

Absolutely brilliant food, best if you like it spicy as it is not dumbed down to "Western" tastes
Luxury hotels
Good MRT transport
So clean you can eat off the streets - but do not dare to flick a cigarette butt or used chewing gum.
Extremely safe to walk around - but there is the death penalty for anything but the most minor amount of drugs, so if that happens to be a thing.... not worth it

Try to go during the Great Singapore Sale or the Food weeks

I'll second the night safari at the zoo...absolutely awesome experience. I'd also recommend the Jurong Bird Park and going to some of the night markets just to soak up the atmosphere.

As someone who doesn't litter or smoke, I didn't find the rules really all that oppressive! If you're not a slob, you'll be fine ;). Singapore is also an 'easy' place to experience an Asian culture, since English is so prevalent compared to neighbouring countries. The food is GREAT! A wide variety, and if you like prawns, they have some that are so large that they could almost be called small lobsters :rotfl:

The hotels around Orchard Road are gorgeous, and don't forget to try a singapore sling at the Raffles Hotel! Shopping...well, you won't get any really good deals unless you want a 'Rollex' or an 'Amrani'. I was amazed at the preoccupation with fake goods! You can get some clothes made to order at a really good price.
