pixiedust: DH and I just purchased DVC during our last trip to WDW (see siggy for report) and have points that need to be used.

Before buying into DVC our next tentative Disney trip was planned for 2010 at Disneyland but now that we have points that have to be used, I am torn between the two following scenarios:

1. Bank the points and then rent them out. Use 2009's points for a week at the THV in early December 2010. I know very little about the renting process. :confused3

or

2. Bank the points and take a trip to our most favorite spot in Mexico for a full week in Feb 2010. Then go to Disneyland in June 2011 staying at the GCV (hopefully). We'd also do 2 days at the beach and 2 days in Vegas on the way home (not using points).

I have read that staying non-DVC is not a great use of points however next to Disney this little sleepy village in Mexico is just as heavenly in an entirely different way. :cloud9:

DH says he doesn't care either way but is leaning toward the rent/THV idea.

:thanks: :goodvibes

I would suggest you price out the Mexico trip withut usng points and see if it is more or less than what you would get to rent your points for. If the MExico trip will cost more than the rent you get for your points then use the points or the tip. If it is less than rent the points and use the money for your Mexico trip.

The OP's post has been edited to remove details (such as # of points, use year, resort, dates, etc.) so as not to be construed as seeking possible rentals.

General questions are fine here, but details may only be posted on our DVC Rent/Trade Board. Thanks all....

My DW and I decided to upgrade our stays to concierge level to use extra points, and staying in a larger room (and bringing extended family). Don't forget about the $95 charge to use those points in other than DVC places.

Keep in mind that you run a high chance of no one wanting to rent the points if you end up past the banking deadline and end of UY. The economy surely has a big impact and supply must be outpacing demand like everything else these days.
:sad2:

Whew! I thought the OP was typing gibberish with all the **'s.
I was confused reading it actually.

We do try to salvage posts via editing when possible (as opposed to deleting), if there are general questions that may be answered here on the general DVC Boards.

Glad you could figure it out! :)

I priced out the place we stayed at last time and it's about sixes. :upsidedow The place we normally stay is not nearly as nice as the timeshare we would be at using our points- that's the part of the reason I cannot decide. If we rent, I could use that money for airfare for WDW Dec. 2010.

 Oops, sorry. Not trying to do anything on the sly. Like I said, I know very little about the process.

:thumbsup2 Thanks. You stayed concierge at Disney, right? My issue is that we wouldn't use this first set at Disney no matter what.

The points have to be banked no matter what as there is no way we can take another trip anywhere before 2010 but that's a good point, maybe folks are renting less?

100% agree with this - we have rented points many times and used the money to book our own vacations outside of Disney :thumbsup2

I have rented points to strangers in the past but in the last few years it's now only to friends and family, so I can't comment on what the rental market for points is like now, but when I did rent to strangers (about 1x a year), I used a contract. It still made me really nervous, I worried if they'd have a good time, worried that everything would work out, etc.

I would say just bank them, or in our case, figure out a way to use the points (are you SURE you can't plan an 'o9 trip?)

:thanks: As of now that's where I am leaning. The rental money could easily pay for our Mexico flights and then some. :thumbsup2

I am very nervous about the process. And there is no way we can swing a trip this year. We had 11 days in WDW this May. :cloud9:
