If you don't know who he is or what I'm talking about then go to the site listed below.

Simon is an American Idol judge, which is the American counterpart to "Pop Idol", which he also judged I believe. Simon is very direct with the pop star wannabes, which causes a lot of friction with the other two judges, especially with Paula Abdul. Basically, Simon is the General George S. Patton of critics!

Anyway, Americans can't stand him. We think he's too cold and heartless to the show's contestants. I, on the other hand, think that it might be a cultural difference. Am I correct to assume that Brits tend to be more direct and to-the-point than Americans?

Yes we know Simon Cowell very well over here. I personally think he's an absolute hoot ! DW quite likes him too. Must be something about the high trousers!

I wonder what the truth is in your remark that the Americans can't stand him... Do you not quietly relish the way he despatches people who clearly have no future in pop singing.

What did you think of Anne Robinson in the Weakest Link ? She's a similar sort of character who puts down the contestants who take part in the show.

Hi Terry,

I like Simon and I don't get what the big fuss is about-especially with this season's crop of contestants knowing that he's a judge. He's hilarious!

From what I've read and see in magazines and entertainment shows we really think that he has an attitude problem. Paula Abdula definately thinks he needs an attitude adjustment LOL!

Anne Robinson just came across as an annoying know-it-all 4th grade teacher. I thought the contestants should have come up with some great one-liners to put her in her place. You should be thankful that you sent us the Beatles before you sent us her :p

I'll stand up for Simon though, he is a critic, and he's the one who giving the record contract, it's his job and reputation that's on the line. Simon is being honest and straightforward with the contestants, and I commend him for that. Sometimes he might go over the line, but I really think is sincerely trying to direct the contestants.

For these talent shows to work I think it's essential that there is a 'bad guy' judge.

Every one loves to hate the person who does that role, but I prefer to hear what they have to say than the other judges who wax lyrical about contestants who suck!

I think you have found it harder in the US to accept this role and I do think that is due to a difference in culture.Americans are more bought up with ,you are great ,and not you can succeed as we might say over here, but you WILL succeed. And anyone who suggests otherwise(and who may be being realistic) is not allowed to burst the bubble;) I'm not sure which is the better outlook

For a relatively new TV show to become the most talked about show in the US, what a feat. This is almost entirely down to the publicity over Simon Cowell,I'm sure he and the shows owners are laughing all the way to the bank:p

Talking of bad guy judges..

Does anyone remember Tony Hatch from New Faces all those years ago ? He was a bad guy judge as well. Wonder what he's doing now.

Can anyone else think of a bad guy judge ?

Terry

I just checked out where Tonu Hatch is now and found this comment on the BBC website.

Square-eyed thirtyplusses will recall Tony Hatch as the Simon Cowell of his day, rotweilering the dreams of hapless young wannabes on '70s teatime talent show New Faces. Their elder siblings however, know him as the songwriting / producing machine behind the ginormous curates egg of 60s pop hits that make up this handsomely retro-packaged, definitive compilation.

Here's a link to what I found.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/easy/reviews/tonyhatch_callme.shtml

And this comment from somewhere else...

His longest running success has been with television theme songs: three notable songs set to give him pop immortality are MR AND MRS, CROSSROADSand NEIGHBOURS.

So shall we see how many bad guy judges we can muster ?

Terry

Not all Brits like Simon Cowell! He's very heartless with some of his comments and it would be nice to seem him get some of his own medicine (although he is obviously far too thick skinned for it to affect him).

You aren't going to send him back home are you??????????

You're asking me that question after YOU sent us Anne Robinson :p

The thing with Anne Robinson didn't work out though - she is still on TV over here at least 5 nights a week!

I saw a bit of American Idol 2 last night - Simon Cowell wasn't at his worst but he still could have been a little more tactful with one or two.

There is one BIG difference between Anne Robinson and Simon Cowell. The former is ugly, but the latter is handsome! That's probably one reason why I don't mind Simon as much ;)
