we've taken ham & cheese sandwiches and bagels with cream cheese/butter, also cookies and fruit and have never had a problem. However, the did confiscate DD & my unopened bottles of water. I suggest you wait until after you go through security to buy your drinks.
Yes, the restrictions are on liquids and gels. You can only take quantities of 3.4oz or less and as much as fits into a 1 quart ziplock, 1 ziplock per person. AKA 3-1-1
Most other food is fine, a sandwich is fine - even a jelly sandwich, but not pudding or yogurt for example
For example you can take your jelly sandwich but if you want to take the jelly to make the sandwich later it has to be 3.4 oz or less and in your 3-1-1 ziplock.
I always make sandwiches and bring snacks and fruit for the kids and use a softside cooler and frozen grapes or carrots to keep things cold. Purchase your drinks after security and add them to the cooler and your set - you get what you like and don't have to wait on the FA to serve.
If you haven't flown in a while its a good idea to check the TSA website for the latest info and restrictions. www.tsa.gov there is a great section on what you can't bring through security, the screening process and traveling with kids. If your traveling with a baby or toddler there are exemptions as well, details also on the TSA website.
