Silly question about food on a flight

Can I bring a PB and J sandwich on a flight? One that I made from home? Will it make it through security?

Our flight is at 4:15 and I will need to feed my picky boys dinner on the flight. A PB and J will definitely be eaten by them.

So, is this allowed?

If not, I'll just bring prepackaged peanut butter crackers. I have flown with those recently.

A PBJ should be fine if you are flying domestically; make sure that you spread the jam and peanut butter on the bread before you pass through security.

Packets of PB or J are not ok; so crackers with the peanut butter on the side may not make it through.

Food brought through security is fine if it is not a liquid or a gel - ie mayo on a sandwich is ok; mayo in a packet is not ok.

(on a side note, my local CATSA agents who know me very well got a chuckle last week - they screened my bag and said 'you're not trying to bring through a jar of jam, are you???' I knew exactly what they saw; opened my bag and showed them the glass travel candle with a metal lid from Bath and Bodyworks. We all had a good laugh about that one, as it truly does look like a jar of jam)

You can bring sandwiches and snacks its the liquids the TSA is concerned about. Make sure you plan to purchase drinks after security or wait for the FA to serve them.

For up to date information this is the TSA webiste: http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

I will suggest that if your kids will eat another type of sandwich to consider bringing something other than peanut butter. Many travelers are allergic and there is a chance that one could be on your flight. I have been on flights where the gate crew made an announcement that there was a nut allergic person on the flight. They would not be serving nuts and asked us to voluntarily refrain from opening or eating anything with nuts. Luckily even that first time I didn't have PB&J for my dd's who love them. Otherwise they woudl have been hungry as I would not risk making someone else sick.

From then on I always travel with snacks and sandwiches other than peanuts and peanut butter just in case.

I am a teacher and know there are lots of people allergic to peanuts. Any other idea of a decent sandwich I could bring that doesn't need to be kept cold? The only reason I was going to bring PB and J was b/c it is so portable and can survive for hours before it is eaten without refrigeration. We'll leave our house at 2:00 and the boys will eat around 5:30.

I just can't justify a bag of pretzels and a drink as dinner. My boys will be hungry and cranky. I also can't truat there will be a decent choice once we get through security. I made that mistake once and I was so hungry (I have food allergies). Never again.

I too would never knowingly put another person who is allergic to peanuts at risk.

It's possible to keep stuff cold. Throw the sandwiches in an insulated bag with a couple snack-packs of frozen carrots.

Go ahead and bring the peanut butter sandwiches with you on your flight. The chances of being on a flight where allergies are a problem is slim to none.

I agree bring the PB& J I have flown many, many times for yrs and my DH used to fly a lot for work and we have never heard that announcement. And P B & J is not in the air so the person would have to touch it so unless they are sitting with you what is the chance. I know someone will say what if it is on the seat well the allergic person shouldn't be touching your child's seat. I have brought it for my kids, and brought peanut butter crackers over Christmas.

True - we fly often and I have only come across it a couple times. I just don't want to take the chance.

If I go to all the trouble of packing a meal for the kids I want them to be able to eat it. If we do end up on a peanut free flight I would not feel comfortable letting them eat a pb&j, YMMV.

So I just bring something that I know won't be an issue. To keep things cold I used to bring frozen juice bags but you can't do that now with the restrictions on liquid. Now I use frozen grapes or carrot sticks and purchased in a new nice lunchbox size cooler to keep everything fresh. FWIW my dd's LOVE to eat the carrot sticks when they are still semi frozen/very cold but wait for the grapes to thaw :)

string cheese (or other chunks of cheese) can be frozen and eaten when it defrosts and makes a good go-together w/the pretzels served in flight... a jelly sandwich w/out the pb...

Nice - My dd's love string cheese and I hadn't thought of freezing that.

Tks
