Silly mug activation question

A friend asked me to bring a refillable mug home from my trip this week because she liked the new design. I purchased it but did not use it.

Does the activation begin at the register when purchased or at the first use from the station?

She will be going in the summer and wanted the mug on her desk for the next 6 months as a daily reminder.

I agree. We usually get rid of our mugs and keep just 1 of each style. This year all 6 of us wanted to keep them. This is the best by far, followed by one of the worst last year.
