My nearly 8 y/o DS who has just finished the 1st grade has really struggled with math. All the rest of the subjects he's gotten A's & B's but Math....I dread to see the report card tomorrow. I am hoping for a D+!

One of his (private school) teacher's sent home a flyer advertising tutoring help for summer at $30 an hour (OUCH!) Through our Community Public School District they are offering Math for 4 days per week, 1.5 hours each day for 5 weeks at $145. I thought that was fair & we're signing him up. Poor little guy is not happy but what can you do? I hate to see him struggle next year.

Anyone have any thoughts on how I can make this a more positive experience for him? (Especially when I feel so sad that the poor kid has to go to summer school!! :( )

I am sending both of my boys to summer school. They transfered from private to public in March. The public school has a whole different approach to writing. (It is actually much more logical in my opinion.) Anyway, I am sending them so they can become more comfortable with the writing process. They will be in 3rd & 4th and are not happy. I have told them that we will make a list of places they might like to go on outings after summer school (it ends at noon) Some days, I will pick them up and surprise them with an outing. Some outings will be free/low cost & some we will spend $$ on. picnic in the park, hiking in the woods, swimming, movie, lunch at a restaurant are what they have come up with so far.

Thanks Mom2Boys...I like that idea of surprising them & taking them for special outings after school. Maybe I'll do that too.

I am concerned though that this summer school may not help him much though since he's already into fractions & his friends who go to public are still doing addition & subtraction. So I hope this won't be time wasted!

Good luck with your boys!

I know that is not how you planned to spend your summer NOR did he plan on spending his summer. Just as a word of encouragement we had to do this with DD for reading problems in 6th grade. I am proud to say "we" are entering 11th in honors and a member of the Beta club. That summer really did pay off!! ALL of her classes saw great improvement.

Of course, now due to the honor classes she has summer reading assignments!

Good luck and hope your summer is fruitful!

Melissa
