Longest vacation we have ever taken/eaten at Disney. Restaurant and Food experiences include:

1.) Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater, 2.) Shula's Steakhouse, 3.) Akershus, 4.) Il Mulino, 5.) Blue Zoo, 6.) CA Grill, 7.) Narcoossee's, 8.) Plaza, 9.) The Wave, 10.) Frontera Cocina, 11.) Tiffins, 12.) Be Our Guest, 13.) Capa

Qwik Serve Shout Outs:
*Gelato - Lickety Split @ Four Seasons, Vivoli il Gelato @ Disney Springs
*Cupcakes/Pastry/Chocolates - Cupcakes @ Sprinkles, 'Fine' European Pastry (with some Disney) @ Amorette Patisserie, Excellent Chocolate @ Genachery - all in Disney Springs.

We again visited our vacation club at Bay Lake Tower/Contemporary for the special July 4th Fireworks, and we also enjoyed the food and proximity to Hollywood Studios & Epcot with a split stay along the Boardwalk too. Disappointed at Sleepy Hollow removing the Fried Chicken-n-Waffle combination, though I generally avoid 'reviews' of Qwik Service other than Casey's hotdogs with the live Piano Player. I will, however, mention the extraordinary additions of both sweet and savory options in Disney Springs with the opening of many lovely new spaces. We are the folks who enjoy the places like Coral Reef, Cinderella's Castle, etc. because these are 'Unique' Disney experiences and we 'give credit' even when the food is only so-so.

May I proudly present…..

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater - We started our first day in the Parks with our daughter finally being tall enough to enjoy Rockin' Roller Coaster before taking the opportunity to dine at Sci-Fi Drive-In. We've tried, but seemingly canceled each previous ADR (Disney restaurant reservation) for one reason or another. Not this time. Doesn't matter that we have a drive-in theater in our town (where we saw Finding Dory just before our vacation) and it does not matter that we have an old-fashioned drive-up diner in a nearby town where food arrives by a Waiter/Server on roller skates - Sci-Fi Theater is a jaw-dropper that happens to be in the middle on an amusement Park and is enjoyed by children of all ages. My wife enjoyed her grilled Salmon Sandwich and the child ate all her 'popcorn' chicken nuggets. Don't laugh - I ordered the vegetarian Shepherd's Pie and asked that it be topped with the very spicy Pulled Pork from another menu item; yes, the $5 up charge made the dish more filling and tasty. This place is a new family favorite - it helps that we are 3-across in a 3-person carseat/table.

Shula's Steakhouse - stopping in to enjoy the upscale bar menu(s) at Signatures can be a real treat and we've been known to enjoy a few late evening oysters & a chocolate soufflé (maybe with a glass of Champagne) at Shula's Lounge. On this night, however, Swan & Dolphin were relatively empty (maybe due to renovations inside Dolphin) and walking in to Shula's without an ADR was not a problem. Cold seafood along with steak and fresh summer corn were all the better after reminiscing with a familiar waiter we've known for a few years by now (who we first met poolside and at other Swan & Dolphin Signatures), as well another waiter with NYC restaurant experiences similar to my own.

Akershus - the strategy here was to have a breakfast ADR before Frozen-stuff start dates were even finalized. The expectation was to complete breakfast to get on Tier-1 attraction (Meet-n-Greet and/or Frozen Ever After) before the general public passed through the so-called tap-styles. We did this before when there was just a meet-n-greet a few years ago and it worked - worked again this time too. We ate breakfast along with dancing with Princesses, rode Frozen Ever After, and took pictures with Anna & Elsa all before 9:20am. No, this is not inexpensive and it does take a bit of forethought to accomplish, but we find the cost to be worth the price - I'm sure some will disagree. Like most of the Character meals, food is not the focus, Akershus is no exception.

Il Mulino - I know the original and these are not the same. But the quality at Disney is very good and possibly the 'best Italian' at Disney. A menu where we can order without looking - seafood appetizers of clams and/or mussels in white or red sauces; the Veal Chop that is pounded-thin, lightly breaded and fried comes aside a salad of baby greens, tomato & onions and is more than enough to share (and should be for cost $$). Round out the meal with an Italian staple like pasta or some other food laced with garlic or lathered in your favorite sauce before having dessert that includes Italian-style cheesecake made with Ricotta Cheese (not cream cheese). Unfortunately, on this night, the kitchen served the veal chop more than just glistening with oil. I'd complain more (and should), but the always free digestif Limoncello can smooth over your troubles. We also made it over to Star Wars Galactic Spectacular this night and had a blast. With Ravello at Four Seasons Resort likely a 'must-do' for our next trip, we may skip Il Mulino.

BlueZoo - Try an interesting start with their version of surf-n-turf combination of scallop-n-short rib atop a schmear of cauliflower puree. And we had to try the new menu item of crispy spare ribs that were tasty (and expensive at $6/bone) - which should otherwise arrive with a finger bowl - and likely does not belong on the dining room menu at a restaurant of this caliber. Despite some modest and expectedly ever changing elements of the entrees, we enjoyed the always available whole-grilled fish presented table side and the 'Cantonese-style' Lobster (which we opted to have 'Butter-Poached' instead). From start (fresh bread basket with fennel butter) to finish (a cherry pistachio dessert combination) and little things in-between (tempura fried string beans with truffle mayo)……BlueZoo remains our favorite Disney restaurant (not named Victoria & Albert).

CA Grill #1 - I panned this place a few years ago shortly after the renovations - it was disturbingly noisy near the kitchen & the food and service needed improvement. After that experience, we have since lowered our expectations for all Disney Signatures. Also, an hour or more of additional transportation time going to/from resort-to-resort does not typically keep a young child happy, so unless we are willing to splurge for a taxi, we simply rely on the convenience of a good meal at the resorts where we stay and CA Grill is at our resort.

A Dis'Boarder, Rusty Scupper, believes CA Grill has the best sushi at Disney and for whatever reason, I wanted to test that theory out. The sushi we had was very good, so too were the 'cooked' sushi items. However, in no uncertain terms, the previous Sushi Chef Yoshie had presentations that were simply over-the-top visual masterpieces of culinary delight. When looked through this prism, the current team is less impressive, albeit, while still serving some excellent food. And a 'shout out' for the wonderful seasonally appropriate salad with fresh peaches. We had capable service and a lovely meal along the window. We kept our additional ADR at CA Grill for later in the trip.

Narcoossee's - My daughter & I went into Magic Kingdom for 'Rope Drop' on July 4th, while the wife enjoyed the spa at Grand Floridian making it a magical day for one and all. We finished the day with one of the most civilized moments of any Disney vacation - a stroll throughout the lobby of the Grand Floridian Resort. Jazz music playing from the balcony above, window shopping , and Mizner's Lounge. Sadly, it took a bit of time when I ordered a 'more expensive' glass of wine that was available from the printed menu (apparently, a Manger needed to measure the pour. Whatever). Anyway, you could easily attempt to nosh at Mizner's or continue your stroll going into Citrico's or GF Cafe for dinner, but we prefer the seafood-centric food at Narcoossee's. Unfortunately, unlike Shula's, we were not lucky enough to walk-up for a table, so we sat at the bar and enjoyed a light meal of Caesar salad topped with shrimp, the always crisp Calamari topped with Chopped Peppers, and the creamiest Grits & Shrimp I may have ever had. We don't go to be 'wowed' or to see the fireworks here, we just enjoy the seafood and the GF Resort.

Plaza - an emotional favorite. Grandpa loved the ice cream parlor - it was amongst his 'favorite places on Earth'. His last visit to Disney included ice cream here twice in one day - much to the delight of his granddaughter. Grandpa passed a few weeks later. As the circle-of-llfe would have it, Grandma has since passed too. We thought to order an extra serving of ice cream, as if they were there with us, but it could never taste as sweet. Nonetheless, we did get some pixie dust - our daughter was selected as Junior Mayor for the Day by Main Street Mayor Weaver (Say, "Allegations," with a smile for the cameras.) with the benefit of an extra 'Anywhere' FP+. Some memories write themselves.

The Wave - It's our resort casual restaurant, so we keep going back. Even before arriving we lowered our expectations here to the point of eating 'just something simple' at the bar and maybe having a few small plates - and it was still disappointing. The freshly baked pretzels had way too much salt that whomever prepared the ones we were served should have been embarrassed. The tasteless rock shrimp & crab cake was so thin that it should have been called a pancake. The flatbread was flaccid and undercooked in the center. Were it not for the friendly service and reasonable beer selections, we might never go back. Really, whatever antonym to the word 'recommend' you can image, that's my word to describe the food at The Wave.

Frontera Cocina - Disney Springs has increased the food options over the past year. The Boathouse is all the rage and if they participated in Tables in Wonderland (TiW) discounting program, we'd have likely dined here as a destination meal. Morimoto is enrolled in TiW, but the mixed reviews on food quality continue and this just didn't seem like a good choice for my wife's preferences anyway. In a nod to the child in all of us, the variety of sweet treat places made the thought of a table service meal almost unworkable. Vivoli il Gelato was open last summer and may have served the best pistachio gelato I've ever eaten - I had to return and was not disappointed (gelato inside Four Seasons Resort Lickety Split may be just as good). This year we also enjoyed chocolate from Ganachery, pastry from Amorette's Patisserie, and cupcakes from Sprinkles - all worth a visit. And we remain fans of Ghirardelli's specially formulated chocolate ice creams & fabulously fresh whipped cream. Sure, there are healthy dining choices to be made in Disney Springs, but it is now a confectionary amusement park with a few shops for clothes and souvenirs.

We didn't care, somewhere between sweet shops we had to stop in at Frontera Cocina, the newest creation from celebrity Chef Rick Bayless, for what was then it's 10th day of operation. Tables are surrounded by full bottles of Tequila. Yeah! We ordered simple with the amazing Pepito Torta sandwich of short ribs, and a plate of slow-cooked Pork Carnirtas served with rice, beans & tortillas. We have decent Mexican food where we live, but this was a notch above. We look forward to returning, but next time we might want to try some of the other places (i.e., Art Smith, Polite Pig).

Tiffins - I had written a longer review as to why we had a bad experience here, but our one experience does not make for a solid review. In brief: Other than Tusker House buffet, no table service restaurant in Animal Kingdom takes Tables in Wonderland discounting - including Tiffins (until today - http://www.wdwinfo.com/news-stories/changes-and-updates-for-tables-in-wonderland/). We were offered lousy seats with noticeably dirty carpeting beneath that same table in an otherwise empty dining room. We had poor and inattentive service. The gimmicky $28 lunch special arrives with too many carbohydrates and on too many plates. We were served ice cold short ribs intended to be hot. The food was tasty, but nothing else about our experience was very good. If/when Avatar Land opens and Tiffins offers some type of dining package for the soon-to-open Rivers of Light show, we'll likely come back and give Tiffins another chance.

Be Our Guest - offers another piece of uniquely Disney dining experiences. if you have the opportunity to sit inside the more intimate West Wing dining room during dinner service, this is the room where you witness the decaying rose and the sounds of thunder. You may ask to be seated here, but it should be mentioned that you might wait a bit longer for your table. Given the costs of most table service restaurants at Disney, BoG dinner is a relative bargain given it's location, location, location. The bonus of meeting The Beast can only be enjoyed at dinner and makes for a better meal.

Capa - In general, we enjoy the little plates of Spanish tapas and wanted to dine here last year. But unlike Swan & Dolphin, Four Seasons does not offer childcare services unless you are staying at their resort. Also, the cost for eating here increases when you factor in that you'd need a taxi. But like Morimoto, Capa was already added to the TiW discounting program and that makes any meal and/or inconvenience a bit more palatable. I'm glad we made the decision to dine 17 floors up and with a view of Disney World.

Our Waiter/Server mentioned what I had come to surmise from looking at the menu in advance - with just one menu this is kinda' two restaurants in one - a Tapas and a Steakhouse restaurant. Of course, you can mix and match, but we find ordering (what should be) too many little plates never means having room for a steak. We prefer the tapas: Crudos of fish can be served with caviar, Dates stuffed with Bacon, acorn-fed Iberico ham is a pork lovers delight, shrimp with Chilies, Pork Belly, Foie Gras, Octopus, and Fried Cauliflower with a Sous Vide egg - are just a few of the choices letting you know great food is being served here. Thankfully, my 7 y.o. foodie daughter (who tried some octopus) may have missed playing with some 'friends' at childcare this night, but she enjoys this type of eating too and has a new 'must do' restaurant at Disney - her mom and dad do too.

Daughter noticed blue-colored ice cream/gelato at Lickety Split in Lobby area before dinner and knew she had to have some for dessert. I took a cold-brewed iced coffee to-go.

CA Grill #2 - we returned for our last evening simply because of the convenience when staying at Bay Lake (and the fact that we simply dislike The Wave). The child ordered her own Pork Belly Sushi (yeah!). The rest of the meal, other than the view, was unmemorable, save the fact the child enjoyed her dessert rice crispy sushi even more than her dinner - making this another 'must do' for her. But for the same cost as Capa (including the taxi), CA Grill is ultimately not about the food, but rather the convenience and/or the view.

Lot'o'food.

My favourite, too. The best pistachio gelato bar none. A nice little indulgence.

Great reviews! We seem to share several of the same favorites (notably Bluezoo and Capa. Also loved Frontera when we tried it.). For some reason, haven't made it to try Shula's, Il Mulino or Narcoossee's... Must fix that. Funny you say that about Mizner's. My wine also took what I thought was a long time to arrive... I wonder if that was the issue.

We may try Ravello before heading back to Il Mulino, maybe because we know that we're heading back to Shula's while along the Boardwalk.

I think we enjoy Narcoossee's so much because the outside deck provides a diversion to our child....and the seafood is very good.

Think about the silliness waiting for a manager to pour a single, albeit, expensive glass of wine while the Bartender still has access to all of the other alcohol. And I'm not conjecturing - Waitress/Server told me why I was waiting.
