Side trip to Key West?

We’ve only done KW as cruisers. They take having fun seriously lol. As expected, lots of touristy trap places to grab a drink/eat on Duval Street. Choose wisely. There are some great seafood places near the fishing dock area.

IDK about that drive. Have heard some stories about traffic from Miami area (especially on weekends) & accidents on the series of bridges that bring things to a stop for hours.

You see a lot of people on bikes and mopeds there, can rent to get around. IMO the hop-on, hop-off tram is a reasonably priced great way to get to the more far flung areas of the town.

Best of all, no need to find a parking spot if using public transportation. The lack of them there equates to what you’d find in a major city. If you drive, be prepared to both hunt for a spot & pay dearly for the privilege unless your accommodations offer it.

Saw the airport when doing the museum next to it. Small, appears it would be easy to navigate. We have considered looking into flights there from MCO. Allegiant, from our northern home airport often has surprisingly dirt cheap flights there. We have been contemplating a separate, bonus trip for up a long weekend getaway. 1-1/2 feet of snow & ice will mess with your brain that way.

That said, despite really liking the overall vibe of the area, a week would be too much for us to spend there. Three or four nights would be our sweet spot to get ‘er all done as long as arrival & departure times nearly a full day.

This sounds like a great way to do a vacation. We always love Disney but get tired with all the running around. Thanks!

My family did (almost) this when I was a kid. We stayed for a week at Poly and then did a week at the Grassy Key. My sisters, parents and I all have more fond memories from our Florida Keys stay than the Disney stay...it was really special! Very relaxing but still lots to do. We were in the ocean every day. It was awesome!

I would do Key West as the second part of the trip.

We just got back from another trip to the Keys (just the Keys, not WDW too). We did it the same way-fly into Miami, drive to Islamorada for a few days, drive to Key West for a few days, fly out of KW. The southernmost part of KW seems to be a bit more laid back. A lot of the bars are on the opposite end of Duval St. We walked almost as much as we do in WDW. You could rent a golf cart though--we did that one year.
