Sick kid upon boarding and no trip insurance..will disney give you park/hotel passes?

I was just on the Magic last month and as part of the boarding documents we were given there was a one page form to be filled out for everyone in the room. It essentially was a medical review of our overall health the last few days and inquired as was stated earlier in a post about fevers, stomach aches, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. within the last few days. If you had that they wanted you to let them know.

I had to sign it that we were all "healthy" for the last few days and symptom free.

As was also stated in another post previously, it really is best for the health and welfare of ALL the cruising passengers and I have to believe that they are pretty on top of it and wouldn't just deny someone boarding the ship for sniffles, it is the big stuff, like flu with fevers and such that spread so quickly.

From what I have read DCL has the best ratings for health safety on the sea, so I'm fine with what they are doing.

Oh, we also use Access America directly for travel insurance and always get it...you never know!

We have always gotten the trip insurance through DCL. However, this site offers it for quite a bit less, and there are so many companies to choose from. For those of you who have purchased trip insurance from someone other than Disney, who did you use?
I used DCL for our first cruise because I didn't know any better. For the next 3 I used TravelEx.

I pruchased our trip insurance through my TA at AAA. We did this because we did not book our flights through Disney and If you don't book your flights through Disney the there insurance does not cover the flights. We book our own flights because traveling form Oklahoma to Florida can be iffy at times. We do not like to relay on getting there on the day of the cruise but would rather arrive the day before the cruise and get a hotel room for the night. It gives us a chance to rest and also to do some shoping at Downtown Disney before the cruise. Historictly we have not insured trips to WDW but as I age this may be part of the expenses from now on.
The need for insurance was brought home to us on our last trip to WDW. We went in eairly Dec 2008 and had a great time but received a rude shock when we arrived at the Dallas airport on our flight home. There were no flights into Oklahoma city. They were in the middle of an ice storm. Luckely for us my sister lives in Dallas and was able to take the 5 of us in for 2 days or we would have been out the cost of 2 hotel rooms for tha period of time. You can just never be sure of what will happen and if you are spending the money to have a nice vacation the insurance should just be included as part of the basic expence.

I always book my air separately and always purchase my Trip Insurance from www.insuremytrip.com. Everything is covered. Air/land/sea, it asks you what you want to cover. A person can always insure the air and the trip itself separately too.

If you TA told you this, then you need a different TA. Granted their company may only work that way...but you don't need to buy the inusrance from them, and a TA should give you all your options. Just saying...

I read through this thread and there is a lot of talk about illness, but here is a good example to get travel insurance. While on the Med cruise this year, I met a gentleman who told me he was carrying his son on his shoulders down the hall on the ship. The child bumped his head and cut it open. The ship's doctor took care of it and stitched it up. All good $400 later. The father had no trip insurance and was out that money. On the same cruise another lady's son broke his leg. They had trip insurance, so they would be re-reimbursed. Just something to think about.

About 7-8 yrs ago, the night before we were to sail, DH got very sick. It was when all that Norwalk like virus was going around and effecting cruise ships. Not sure if that's what he had or not.....we had just spent a week at Disney and that night about 11 pm he got very sick.....non stop throwing up, diarrhea, etc. No way could he leave our hotel room let alone board a cruise. I called the insurance company (Access America that we bought through DCL). They told us that since DH was sick that we could just cancel and get our money back. I then called DCL and cancelled the trip. When we got home, I had to contact AA again to find out about getting our money back and they told us that since DH didn't see a dr to varify he was sick, we couldn't get any money back. My MIL and FIL both went on the cruise that we were supposed to go on. They told us that the DCL people told everyone on the bus that if you were sick or even felt a little not up to par, to let them know and you'd get a refund or credit.....can't remember which they said now. We then wrote a certified letter to Disney and told them what my in laws said and what the insurance company said. They then sent us a voucher for a free cruise. I specifically asked the man on the phone with the insurance company at the time if we needed any proof or dh to go to the dr and he said no. Sadly I didn't write his name down. But was very happy Disney gave us another cruise.

I know that in all the reading I have been doing on Disney cruises on this forum and others, I came across a story where someones child got car sick on the way to P.C. They were denied boarding even though the child was not examined.

The family left the port and went to an urgent care center and was examined by a doctor who couldn't believe they were denied as the child was not showing any signs or symptoms (fever, runny nose etc) of having a infectious disease.

They returned to the port with a letter from the doctor saying the child was safe to travel and did not pose a risk to the other passengers- and were told that their cabin was given away.

However, they did receive a voucher for another cruise.

Given away? Not sure how that can happen at the port. Your room can technically be given away but surely there was another cabin available?

I just hope that whom ever examines anyone keeps in mind that there are alot of reasons why someone may be having gi issues with out being sick, I know I am not the only woman with ibs, so do I answer truthfully? Just like my son, I know that if he is having alot of sinus drainage, he will throw up from coughing....can anyone else get it....no, and its more than likely a one time thing. So again do I answer truthfully? If I ever thought we had something more than that I wouldn't subject anyone to it, but really there are more than one reason for all those s/s, and I for one really don't want to have to say no we can't cruise because mommy's tummy is acting up right now...please. With all that being said, since I am sure I offended someone, I will also throw in the fact that I am an RN. Bottom line is we all know what is normal for us and our families.

Given away? Not sure how that can happen at the port. Your room can technically be given away but surely there was another cabin available?

I dunno, those were the words the poster used when he described what happened when they returned to port. Perhaps they sold their room to another passenger as an upgrade.

And, as with other cruiselines, if a passenger becomes ill with flu, g.i. issues or something contagious during a cruise, the passenger is quarantined in their cabin. Meals are brought in and I believe a DVD player and DVDs are made available.

When my dd was 5, she became sick on the first night of our wc cruise and threw up in the kids club. We had spent the day at MK the day before and she was so excited that she didn't sleep and thus the the illness. We picked her up, dressed only in a tshirt and they told us that she would have to be out of the club for 24 hours and checked at the health center before she could return. We did what they said and had no problems, plus they cleaned her clothes. But please don't take a sick person on the ship, if it is contagious it can get bad. On our Med cruise in May, someone apparently carried a virus onboard and it made a few people sick, including our dd (now 12), who picked it up on the last day of our cruise and was very sick. Luckily, it was our last day. As for the trip insurance, we did insuremytrip.com for our Med cruise (14 days) and for coverage for everything with a great policy was about $150. It was worth the piece of mind.

Depending on your credit card, you may also have travel insurance through that - and, barring that, AmEx sells it separately. Usually these cards come along with not insignificant annual fees (mine is $450), but I know that mine covers $100,000 medical evac, cancellation for medical reasons, and even acts of war/terrorism, and full reimbursement if something happens to the cruise ship, flight cancellation, et cetera, for me and a certain number of companions. It even has full rental car insurance. It's a 20+ page booklet of stuff (aside from the other card benefits) and it ships to me in a box.

Here is the info that is in the form you have to fill out.

Wow your trip insurance costs a lot! Is that the norm for you guys in the states? For me and my GF is costs us about £50 ($75) for couples annual trip insurance!

I bought the highest rated trip insurance available for a 15 day WBPC AND our excursions AND flights AND prehotels and it was still less than $250. It depends on your ages, how many people and how soon the trip is happening and the overall cost you are insuring.

Wow this resurrection of this thread is not what I would've expected. Yes we bought the trip insurance and my son didn't get sick. Thankfully we had a wonderful cruise and since many others.

We bought our trip insurance with our TA for only 250 and has a million dollar cap. With having a daughter with special needs I know how expensive medical flights are, hospitals, and such. This is our first cruise and I wasn't taking any chances.
