I posted last week about how my kids were starting with a cold. After a long long week the 7 yr old has an ear infection so bad that her ear drum ruptured last night :( We are planned to leave 7 days from now to WDW. Took her to the ER last night and they didnt have a clue what the blood from her ears was! Told me to see the pedi today, saw him and he ordered the antibiotic, the strongest one he could, ear drops and wants to see us Friday. He seems fairly positive about it all and hope also that she will be able to fly. Im so worried that he will clear her and she not be alright for it, or he will jsut tell me she cant go. Either way im not wanting to make a choice about this. DH is staying home with the two 4 yr olds and I could go with the older two kids but i just couldnt do that to my DD. :( I dont see driving as an option. I live in Mass, it would take 2 days, we either would have to cut the trip down to 3 days or miss getting home in time for christmas. This is just a big mess.

Wish us luck she gets better and cleared for trip. :)

Thanks Tink~

Is there any way you can push the vacation back a few days(to let the antibiotics work) and give you more time to scramble? If not, it might be for the best to let it go. I know we hate to not go on a planned trip, but perhaps later in the year would be better (like April). Good Luck.

7 day should be plenty of time for the antibiotics to work and for you to be able to fly. My niece has ruptured her eardrum 3 times and she is having surgery soon to correct it again since they found a problem they can fix. After a few days on the antibiotic she was feeling fine. You should be okay.

My daughter ruptured her eardrum as well when she was little. 7 days of antibiotics should take the worst of it away but I would highly suggest buying Earplanes for her. DD had alot of ear pain on flights and Earplanes seemed to help a great deal.

I CAN FEEL THE PRESSURE OVER HERE!!! Man, I will definitely be thinking about you and your family this week. Besides all the stress worrying about the trip you've got to stay tough and take care of a sick munchkin! It's not easy being the Mommy.....hang in there girl!!!

I have no experience with ear infections (knocking on wood here), however I do think that sometimes these things work out just in time, and am REALLY hoping that is the case with this.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed! Let us know what happens!

Thankyou everyone for your sincere wishes. It is getting crazy around here, i havent packed one thing due to all of us being sick and now the chance we cant go, but i too think the Dr will clear her. I just need to hear HIM say "yes she will be fine". That will make it easier for me, right now i feel such pressure that this kid could end up in terrible horrible pain :( Im in the medical field and i should know that as long as the antibiotic is started soon enough {which it has been} and the week of healing the rupture, should make it ok for her. I guess when your the mommy it all has a different appearance to it.
Thanks again, you are all wonderful.

Ill post Friday after the Dr visit.

when my son who is now 4 was 22 months my husband planned a trip home (Morocco) . Thats a very long flight. Ds got an ear infection that took 2 trips to the Doc to clear up. He was finally able to fly with only a day to spare. Antibiotics are only ordered for 7-10 days to start with. If she doesnt start feeling better by day 3 or 4 i would take her back to the Doc cause they may need to change meds. Otherwise she should be fine just remember to bring gum to chew on takeoff and landing.

What a bummer, Tinker. I'm sure by then, though, the antibiotics will have worked their magic. Ugh. Doesn't it just figure???? I've been quarantined here at home (near Boston, too!) because I don't want the kids exposed to anything before we leave Friday! I went to Target the other night and everyone was hacking and coughing.....I couldn't get out of there and take my herbs fast enough. Good luck, and I hope you are able to come to Disney!

Went to the Dr today and he cleared her for takeoff. His concern was she not go under wate. Then he said "particularly no scuba diving". Ok im sure there are kids fortunate enough to scuba dive and have that experience...someplace. However It just wouldnt strike me as something to do with my 7 year old. Maybe its just me.
He wasnt convinced however that the ear drum hole had closed because of all the debris it is still filtering out {yucky i know sorry} but he said flying will be ok. As for the Ear-Planes he said they wont make a difference ? Dont know if that was fact based as a physician or if he just doesnt have issues with cabin pressure personaly.

Thanks for all the support everyone ! See you when we get back from the World!!

Great news although my DD would disagree with your Docs comments about Earplanes, lol. Glad you can still go :)

My brother ruptured his ear drum days before we were to fly to Arizona. He was advised to hold a cup at either ear. It worked and he survived the trip without any complaints.

So glad you get to go! I can't wait to read your advice/tips after you get back!
