Shuttle Launch - Castaway Cay

I wasn't able to see it from St. Pete this time. Too much "Sahara sandstorm" haze in the air, unfortunately.

Saw it from home in Brevard County!! Very exciting and emotional. The news said it was visible for about 100 miles(???) (Can we believe the media anymore?) :teeth:

I saw it from Hernando county. It was a great site. I missed watching the launches, hard to believe it's been 2.5 years.

I had to settle for the TV, but it was an extra special sight for me, because our last Disney Cruise was January 25 2003 to February 1st, so we were waiting for the shuttle landing in the Radisson parking lot after our cruise. I'll never forget when the time came – and passed. Finally someone came running out of the hotel and yelled "they lost them!" It was a somber end to our trip.

It was with great pleasure that I saw the shuttle's successful return to the skies!

Isn't Castaway Cay about 100 miles from Port Canaveral? If the launch was visable for 100 miles, then, weather permitting, it should have been visable from Castaway Cay, but the Wonder won't be there until tomorrow (Wednesday).

I think CC is about 225 to 250 miles from Port Canaveral.

My mom took my nephew to New Smyrna Beach, FL and saw the shuttle take off this morning. It was the first shuttle she saw take off and said it was amazing sight to see.

Yes, Verandah Man is correct - Castaway Cay is located 225 nautical miles from Port Canaveral, Florida.

I don't think you would be able to see the shuttle. Maybe if the ship was on the way back and not too far off the coast you might be able to see it. It is an awesome sight to see especially at night. If you’re in the Orlando area upon its return you might be able to see it come in (though it looks like a plane coming in) and sometimes even hear the sonic boom.

Melissa, I was on that cruise too! We were in the car on our way home to my parents in Haines City when we heard it on the radio. That was also my sister's birthday, so I can remember the date easily....

I'm in Sacramento, and the shuttle passes over here when it lands at Edwards AFB. We hear the sonic boom here about 8 minutes before it lands.
Edwards is about 400 miles from here.

If you missed the launch, you may still be able to see the re entry in a couple of weeks. It will be before daylight, and can be seen from a large area of the U.S.

Here in East Texas, there will be many folks get up early to cheer on the successful re entry. Two years ago, this was the saddest place in the U.S. as we picked up the pieces of the shuttle crash.
The shuttle will look like a big comet streaking across the sky. Pretty awesome.

Willie- Proud to live in the greatest nation in the history of the world.

We saw a shuttle launch a few years ago from the fishing pier on Sanibel Island. I thought that was pretty amazing!

This is totally OT but WMILLER86, what a great picture in your signature! Sorry for being OT. :flower:

Just a note to say we wish a successful mission as well. We were in Orlando at Christmas time prior to the last mission. My oldest son is a big space nut. We spent an entire day at Kennedy Space Center and took the extra tour out to the lauch area. We have great pictures of him with the shuttle on the pad behind him. We were especially interested in that mission as Laurel Clark was a Racine native and attended the same high school as my DH (she was in the class just ahead of him).

We were up early to watch the rentry on the NASA channel. My husband and I just looked at each other when they kept calling the shuttle and not getting a response. It took a lot longer for our boys to understand what was going on. A sad day for everyone.
