Shuttle Launch and Car Rental question

My fiance and I are planning our honeymoon to DisneyWorld. There is a chance that the Space Shuttle may launch while we are there. If it does go up we both want to go to the beach to see it. (we know we can see it from the world but want to be closer, we both teach and space is something we teach).

My question is: Is there a way to rent a car from our resort or do we have to get back to the airport? We are staying at AKL. We plan on using Disney tranportation while there and only want to rent the car if we have to.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can rent a car, through Alamo, at the Dolphin. I would head to AK and then take the bus from there to the Swan/Dolphin, then rent your car. Reverse it for return.
Just be aware, the roads around KSC can get jammed when there is a launch. We will be in WDW until 8/10, then driving to Cocoa Beach for a few days before our cruise. There is a shuttle launch scheduled for 8/9....I'm hoping they delay it be a day or two so we can be right there, rather than watching from WDW.

Alamo/National also has a rental location at the Disney Car Care Center. They will pick you up (for free) at your WDW resort, and give you a ride back when you return the rental. We've done this in the past and it worked like a charm!

Many years ago (too many to count) we were staying at a hotel right on Cocoa Beach when the last (I think it was the last or close to it) of the Apollo launches took off from the Cape.

The beach we were on was actually shaking, and Cocoa Beach is not that close to the Cape. An incredible site watching the spaceship going up with the plume of white smoke behind it. It is something that I will never forget.
