Shutters at Vero Beach

My family spent 3 nights at Vero last week. We had a wonderful time - like always. This was our 5th visit.

We have always eaten at Shutters and while it was nothing spectacular it was good enough and we enjoyed our meals there.

Last week - wow - we had dinner there one night and not one of us wanted to finish our meal. The menu had nothing on it that appealed to us. The food was HORRIBLE. I mean - bad. I was sooo incredibly disappointed.

Our service - was great - as usual. It was just the food and menu that really let us down.


Has anyone else felt this way recently? We did not go to Vero last year - so I am not sure if this is a recent change or something that has been going on for a while now.

We went there a couple of months ago and have been there a few times. The food at shutters is OK, a bit overpriced for what is offered. I have never experienced anything as bad as what you describe but it doesnt surprise me to hear it. We sent our inlaws there a few months ago as a gift and included dinner at Shutters which didnt go well. The seafood came out raw and cold. They took back to kitchen and reheated and reserved.

Thats a problem everywhere you go when the restaurant does not pride it self on serivce. IE Ruth Kris, M&S. Typical Franchised restaurants and mom and pops places like Shutters cut costs everywhere, if it means reheating cold seafood then so be it. Problem is then the food is tough and over cooked because then their trying to make a point for you being picky. I worked in the restaurant industry too long, and if you have ever seen the movie "WAITING", which has scenes that really occurs in your local restaurants, then you should watch it, enjoy the comedy and take notes of the serving staff. FYI Never piss off those who handle your food. They generally do not care either way if they get fired or not, because they will just move on to the next job.

Sorry for the rant, but to sum up, shutters is doing nothing that already hasnt been done.

DD12 had the half of a roasted chicken and the "half" was one of those scrawny birds with very little meat. DH had the mahi-mahi, overcooked and very bland. DD meal also came with succotash but it was like no succotash I ever made - a little bit of corn, a cream sauce and what looked like black beans floating in it - she could not eat it.

As everyone else has said, it is totally worth it to go off-site and eat at Squid Lips - their praline-crusted tilapia was nothing short of outstanding.

Tonight we plan to try out the flatbreads in the Green Cabin Room.

There is a great sandwich shop a few miles away from VBR right on the beach called "The Red Onion" , check it out, really good fresh food and prices are very reasonable. They have a great grouper sandwich. Shutters really has to get their act together, prices are just way too high to serve mediocre food.

This sums up how I feel about Shutters. IMHO, the quality of food is more in line with Cracker Barrel prices - and it does not even have a direct ocean view. It's the one weak link at VB, and I wish they'd get a great chef/manager that would turn it around.

To be fair we have had some well prepared meals there and pleasant service for dinner and luch, its just that they dont seem to be consistant and the prices arent in line with Vero area restaurants. I have read many other complaints about the prices from other DVC members. We took the kids to the character breakfast there one morning and the breakfast was absolutely terrible. It comes as a set menu and was pretty poor. The breakfast offered at McDonalds would have blown it away for a fraction of the price, although no characters .

A couple years ago Shutters seemed much better. When we purchased our VB contract we ate there a couple times and considered it a place that our family of diverse eater could be happy with. Unfortunately, since then things have changed. The menu, like all the menus at WDW, was streamlined. The chef changed. One of the local DISer's reported on the decline at that time. It used to be popular with local residents.

Well this trip we only ate there once. And I agree with the other poster.... it was uninspired. The menu really doesn't work for us anymore. The only one really happy with their meal was our DD6. And for us, the service was not great.

Having dined there more than just a few times over the last 10 years, can't agree more.

We have eaten there at least a half dozen times between 8/05-8/07. Our last visit was 8/07 and was a huge disappointment. We experienced cold food, overcooked food and high prices. I honestly don't mind paying higher prices if the food is good. Our bill was over $400.00, couldn't wait to get to WDW and pay the same price but get quality food. We won't be back to Shutters on our next trip.

It seems lie the consensus seems to be the same for most everyone, its a shame since our family doesnt like to leave Disney property for our stays and we normally dont cook anything in our room other than toast in the morning. We unfortunately are making alternative plans for our coming July visit.
