2 adult first timers using a restaurant.com $25 gift certificate.
I am not a big steak eater. I could have a good hamburger and be just as happy, if not happier. Like steak. Just probably my last choice anywhere. And I am one of those dreaded people who like my steak 100% done, and even a little charcoled on the outside. Then I like to drown it in sauce.:sad2: Shameful, I know. I like a little steak with my vinegar based sauce, please. :scared1:

No ADRs. Dinner time on a Saturday night. Place not very busy at all. Far more empty seats than filled.

Dark atmosphere, with Frank Sinatra playing in the background. (Not a FS fan myself. But I know a lot of people still like 'em. To me gave the atmosphere a more out of date feel. :confused3 Although the restaurant has very nice decor. I guess between that and the old football pictures, maybe that was why I had a 70's type vibe.)

The seater provides a football with some steak options written on it. :confused3

Also a regular menu, with the same options included. So I guess the football is for effect. (Still leaves me scratching my head.)

Again, not being a steak lover, what I wanted to order I could not due to the restaurant.com certificate. I wanted a wedge salad (appy) and crab mac n cheese (a side). That would have been plenty for me.

But I had to choose an entree. Now normally I would not care. Unfortunately I was having to choose what $35 - $40 range entree I wanted, that I really did not want.
DH was having a hard time choosing what steak. They all sounded great to him. You might as well figure their steaks are around $40 a pop.
And we come to find out, the prices are all a la cart.
So for example a $40 steak gets you just that -- a steak. No nothing with it. (Can't they at least glob a spoonful of potatoes on the plate for $40?)

We were having a hard time deciding. (Mostly me.)
Luckily, our server mentioned a two person dinner special we could use with the certificate. And we went for it for the variety.
For $95 (total) we each got a large wedge salad :thumbsup2 , a 6 oz filet mignon, a crab stuffed lobster tail, two veggies sides, and a dessert.
I think DH would have liked a larger steak. But the lobster tail and food variety swung us in that direction.

Of course bread and butter is brought out. Very fresh sourdough bread. DH isn't too much a sourdough person. We each had a piece and that was plenty.

I just had ice tea to drink. And it is weak bottled ice tea. Might as well have had water.
DH did have water once he heard it was the bottled ice tea. I should have too. (We each had the bottled ice tea at the Italian restaurant at S/D. I should have remembered. Although the time before I had flavored and last night I had regular.) I had more flavor from the fresh lemon than the bottled tea.

Anyway -- the main food comes. :wizard:
They have us cut into our steaks to see if they are done correct. (And luckily the server carries a small flashlight on him. ) I had ordered mine very well done. Pink throughout. Near the blood oozing stage. So back mine went.
The sides, on a side dish, were the largest asparagus spears I have ever seen, and mashed potatoes.
Unfortunately my hollandaise sauce for the asparagus is back in the kitchen with my steak. :confused3
But it was grilled asparagus and very good. I have to give them credit that the steak cooking longer did not take very long and was perfect when it came back. You know someone can cook a good steak when they do it well done done and not be at the jerky stage. (Chefs de France is great at it too. :thumbsup2 )

The steak was very good, just as we both expected. Overall all the food was good. The steak was the high point of the meal.

The desserts -- DH had a piece of key lime. I had chocolate. (Those were the only two choices with the special we ordered.)
The piece of cake was huge. I barely made a dent. And frankly it was out of the frig cold and reminded of a cake Sam's Club sells. A dollop of whipped cream on the side made it more palatable.
DH did not finish his pie slice either. He said it was very heavy and dense, and did not care that much for it either.

The server had asked if we were celebrating anything. And we were -- our wedding anniversary. So she was sweet and brought out two glasses of champagne. Very nice. Except I don't like alcohol to drink. (I must have finicky taste buds. Never acquired the taste and it all tastes the same to me -- like mouthwash.)
So DH drank the two glasses. He said he only had champagne one other time, and what he had last night was far better than whenever he had it before (years ago).
It was a very nice gesture from our server. And all the service was good.

Glad we went. The steak was very good, as expected. With the tip added, and the $25 off, we spent $102.
Afterwards DH said he rather eat at Flying Fish for the $. I said I rather eat at Artist Point for the $.
So there ya go. Just our personal experience.

Thanks for the review!

Shula's has a 1970's football feel because the great Don Shula coached the 1972 Miami Dolphins to an undefeated season. He is a football icon.

On the whole, it sounds like you had a nice meal, but Shula's probably isn't be the best choice for your taste.

I mean, if someone doesn't love steak, a fine steakhouse is simply not a good place for them to eat. It's the same thing as someone who doesn't like Asian food going to a Chinese restaurant. Just not the right choice for that person's tastes.

BTW, Happy Anniversary! :)

Correct -- we went there more for DH. (But I bought the certificate.)
I can appreciate a good steak. Just not one to spend a lot of money on one as I don't appreciate it that much.
The one time we ate at Yachtsman's, I ordered chicken. ;)

Interesting restaurant/food review ... thanks for sharing ... and Happy Anniversary!

Thanks for the review. We are going there in December for the lst time. My dh asked for this place too, not me. As your dh, mine is the steak lover.

What was the dress code. I am just thinking of doing black pants and a top.

Happy Anniversary.

I know when we walk into Shula's to plan on at least $100 per person.

It's a special "once in a while" treat.

But, if I wasn't crazy about great steaks, I'd never go again...

Good choice. I'm thinking the black pants without the top will get you in a bit of trouble.

Just a quick question--did you check the menu, ambiance, etc in advance???
