I am shopping for a bridal shower gift, and was just curious, how much do you normally spend for a shower, knowing that there is also going to be a wedding gift and a bachelorette prty to pay for? I normally do about 100 for the shower and 150 for the wedding gift, but I have not been working as many shifts lately. I am thinking of doing less for the shower, but keeping the wedding gift the same. I also do not think we will attend the wedding, so we dont have to "cover our meal" or whatnot.

How much do you normally spend for a shower gift? I am once again, shocked at the things on the registry! There are several things over 500 bucks, and the wine glasses are waterford crystal, and 80 bucks a pop. She would like 10 of each style BTW. Eeek!

The shower gift (to me) is usually smaller, I spend like 40-50, then usually around 90-100 on the wedding. But do what you can afford or want to do, there are no rules!

And just keep in mind the registry companies- Macy's, Crate and Barrel etc. offer discounts on items on your registry after the wedding so I think that is why people stick random expensive items on there because after the wedding it they still want it they can get it for 10-15% off (but only if it was on there before their wedding date). But $80 glasses- yikes! Haha...be creative :)

I spend $50 max for the shower gift. If we go to the wedding, usually $150, possibly more if we are very close to the couple or in the wedding.

If we are invited to the wedding and do not go, we usually give $100.

Bachelorette - if I go, $30 gift or gift card to Victoria's Secret. If I don't go to the bachelorette party, but was invited, I don't usually give a gift. I've been to bachelorette parties where some people don't even bring a gift or just bring a gag gift.

It depends on who the shower is for. Close family? I'll give them some "gifties" and a check for $100-150. Friends and their grown children? a small "giftie" and a check for $50.

One of my best received gifties for newlyweds is my grandmother's Applesauce Cake recipe. I buy the bundt pan,a wooden spoon, the black walnuts, the almond and vanilla flavorings and a jar of applesauce.Things that newlyweds don't have in their pantry yet. Then I put a little note in the bag that says, "This cake has never been known to fail. It's especially good warm on a cold fall morning or if you just need to make peace." :goodvibes

I usually spend $100-$150 on the shower gift. I love looking at people's registries. Our oldest son and daughter-in-law registered for an $800 trash can. I would have purchased Waterford but there's no way I'd spend that much on a garbage container.

Shower is usually no mor ethan $50.
Wedding depends on my relationsip to the coouple etc.

In my area, it's usually no less than $150.

:goodvibesI ended up spending 89 dollars on a weird variety of stainless steel kitchen tools (garlic press, ice cream scoop, cheese grater) and then a 3 tier cooling rack, a trifle bowl, and a set of kitchen towels. Some of the items were on sale, so I lucked out. I think I bought ALL of the lower priced items, so the next guy is sort of forced to buy bigger things. (sorry)

Totally odd assortment! :) I hope she likes them, I sprung for the pretty purple and white gift wrap :) I have only met her once, but she is marrying my cousin who is a sweet kid so she must be a nice girl. :goodvibes

Until a thread a few weeks ago here on the DIS, I never even knew that it was common to give both a shower gift and a wedding gift. I've always just thought of whatever present I give a couple as a "marriage" gift . We didn't get two separate gifts from people when we got married 20 years ago :confused3.

In my area, weddings & gifts have become really out of control. You get an invite with a registry for the shower, and invite with a registry for the bachelorette, and then another invite with the wedding registry although it is customary to give CASH for the actual wedding around here.

I had never heard of a bachelorette gift until I showed up at one & everyone had naughty lingerie in little bags. I was mortified.

I was always taught that is is rude to put a registry on the invite, but the last 10 or so invitations I have gotten have had them on the invite. I actually got one especially tacky invite for a "greenback" shower. (bring cash)

Yea and don't forget the engagement party gift---so for ONE wedding there is the engagement party gift, bridal shower gift, bachelorette party gift then of course the wedding gift! I know I have to put in a day or two of overtime at work whenever a wedding invite comes LOL

most people around here(people who attended our wedding and weddings we've attended) spend between $20-$50 for a shower gift and about the same for a wedding gift. Unless you are the parent or grandparent of the bride/groom I don't know anyone who usually spends much more than that amount. Or else everyone in the world we know is really cheap, but most people don't even register for many really expensive items(ie stuff that is $75 and over)

Depends on how close I am to the person. Close relative, $50 or more. Aquaintance, friend, co-worker, etc. $20-$30.

Anywhere from 20-50 for Shower gift and wedding gift 50-100. Just depends on how well I know someone and how many parties I have been invited to that need gifts LOL.

I think they have become out of control everywhere.
Gets more and more complicated!

For a co-worker: $20 - $25
Close friend or family member: $30 - $50.

And then more for the wedding.

ETA: I usually spend more on baby shower gifts. Not sure why.

About $20 for a shower gift.

Between $50 and $70 for wedding.

I am a good shopper though and usually find things on sale or use my coupons, so I actually get more value for my money.

$50ish for shower

$200ish for wedding

However this varies depending on close I am to the people getting married.

Around $75 for an engagement gift.

Around $50 - $75 for a shower gift (it's often two showers so then about $50 for each).

Around $250 for a wedding gift.
