Should we use the bus or our rented car to get to parks?

We personally love Disney transportation. We both drive everywhere, all the time, so much it seems like a second job! So when we're in WDW it's great to know we don't have to worry about driving ever! We can have a few drinks, and just leave the details to Disney lol. We did have a rental car on one trip because we got an extremely cheap deal. The only time we really used it was for our first night dinner ADR at 'Ohana, and for morning EMH at AK. We found it was very useful for the dinner ADR, and useful for the park, but not such a convenience that we would miss it by taking the bus. I really like to do Disney immersion trips with no car, so we can truly just get lost in the World. That's just me though :thumbsup2

We always use the bus system...makes me feel extra special that I got to stay on site!

We've taken 43 trips to WDW, all stays have been on property and never rented nor wanted a car. One of the big draws for us is using the free transportation around the property. Having access to 4 theme parks and 2 water parks across the property and being picked up at our resort makes us feel special. Others complain of the extra time it takes, no matter where you are or what you're doing, you're going to have to stand and wait for something so why not wait for something that convenient and free. We like to make our trips 9-12 nights, we prefer deluxe resorts and to do all this, a rental is an unneeded expense. We actually enjoy using the buses and boats, especially after having a few drinks around the parks, climbing into a super cold bus and not worrying about routes and directions and getting dropped off in front of our resort is ideal. If Disney done away with the free transportation, I would seriously have to rethink our vacation destination, we've been spoiled by the chauffeured service.

I hate being tied to disney transporation. The one exception is taking the Boat from WL or FW to MK. I do have some control issues though and can not stand waiting on anything, I keep it to myself(for some reason ride lines are an exception). I find when I am parking my car especially at EP and DHS a lot of times I do not even wait for the tram, I walk up to the gate. I do find it quicker(could be my control issues in play) driving myself to the parks. I also almost never spend one whole day in a park. I go in the morning, go back to the hotel in the afternoon, and back to a park at night and all that waiting would drive me nuts. Driveing worst case scenerio is the same amount of time as a bus, but it can save you a lot of time when the busses are slow to come. I have had great and poor experiences with the busses, the drivers can be very entertaining, but prefer driving. The only place I took them regularly was to PI for obvious reasons.

We never rent a car. I love, love, love Magical Express and busses to the parks. It's a no brainer for us. We have never felt tied to a schedule or worried we wouldn't have transportation back to our resort. We've been some of the last to leave at closing time and there is always a bus waiting for us. To hurries, no worries.:goodvibes

We always drive. Not fans of crowded busses full of cranky, sweaty people or having to wait for them in long lines after the park closes - you wait in lines all day already depending on time of year. We usually get to the parks early so we have parking up near the front so the walk is no long. And as far as the MK we love the monorail and ferry so we don't mind parking at the TTC and taking those to the MK - they count as extra rides. :)

We've bee to WDW 3 times. First trip - all Disney transportation. Second trip - we rented a car and use Diseny transportation half the time. Third trip - we rented a car on points = free! We decided to drive each day and it was GREAT!!!!!!! No more lines to wait in. No sweaty people to share the ride with --- just us! So back we go this August and I am already checking our point for rentals! GOOD LUCK!

This is always a thorny question subject to many different opinions onthe DIS.

I say it greatly depends. It depends greatly on what point A is and What point B is. Sometimes it's far faster and better to use WDW transportation, other times it is far better to drive.

Generally, if you can go directly by monorail or eaily walk to your destintation - that is going to be your best option, unless you have mobility issues with walking.

If the bus is going to make multiplt stops before you get to your destination, then driving is probably better.

If you are going to resort for dinner - the short anser is that it's better to drive - UNLESS....

When you drive, you need a designated driver, and a navigator. simply put, navigating WDW is not always straightforward. Getting lost can be time consuming. WDW often has speed traps. Obviously, it is bad to drink and drive. I'm not a huge drinker by any means, but not needing to worry about having a designated driver at WDW IS kind of a treat. You can share a bottle of wine or some cocktails over dinner and relax. (so long as it won't break your budget! ;))

Conversely, buses ae not private. You have to deal with other folks. Sometimes that can add greatly to a vacation, sometimes it can diminsh your fun. I've seen it go both ways.

Leaving a park at park just after the fireworks/Fntsmic can be a pain via either, but is gerenally slower by bus.

Also, mid day - buses may only come every 25minutes. So that can be slower than driving- unless MK is your destination. Most buses going from a resort to AK also stop at one ofthe water parks. Ditto for many DTD buses. for either of those two destinations driving may be faster. EXCEPT that DTD has a large parkign lot. It has two bus stops - so going back via car may mena you have to walk the parking lot to get back to yoru car. That can be a long walk. One bus stop is in the middle of DTD, the other is at the far end. Finiding a parking space can be a challenge too.

If you have small kids, you'll need to use car seats inthe car but not the bus. Conversely, you can put things in the trunk (as long as they won't melt!) In either a car or bus, you'll need to fold a stroller. In a car, you'll need to dismantle a scooter, but loading a bus in scooter isn't very fast either.

Ahh...I've already gone into too much detail, I fear. Quickly put - if in doubt - ask a CM. Even after many trips, I sometimes find it best to ask based on time of day and where I need to go. They often give a great answer I had not considered.

Finding the bus stop is easy. Every day, countless folks forget where they parked and it can take a while to find a car. If you have acell phone or camera - note your parkign space (or jot a quick note.)

Since youa re at CBR, I will go out ona limb and say all the above issues aside - except for going to MK - PROBABLY for most days, you'll find that drving to your destination is faster than taking the bus - so long as you keep in mind my comments above. The ride to MK will not be short - but when you drive to MK the parkig lot is far from MK. To get to your car from MK you generally need to take a monorail and a tram - while the buses drop you off close to the park gate. Drinking at MK is not an issue though as it's a dry park. If you are dining at any monorail loop resort it is easy from MK.

If you're a fan of public transportation, take the bus.

If you're not, drive your car.

I always rent and I always drive. NOT a fan of public transportation, though...for all the obvious reasons.

Wow! Thanks everyone for all the replies and awesome insight!

I am curious though... Why do so many people say they'd drive to some parks but not to MK?

I think we'll probably use a mix of our car and bus transportation. I think Dh is excited to not have to drive to the parks.

Getting a bus FROM the park TO the resort at mid-day can be REALLY frustrating. And you're just stuck there until a bus arrives, when you're tired and you really want to just flop down on your bed.

The reason to take the bus to MK is because the parking lot and the park are divided by a large lake. If you park, then you need to takea tram across the parking lot, THEN take the boat or monorail to the park. When you take the bus, it will drop you off much closer to the front gate ofthe park. Also, several resorts (not yours) are actually located closer to MK park than the general parking MK lot itself.

Look at a reliable map - like Google to see what I mean. The map might not label everything, but the free/online Disney maps are rather disorted and won't give you very complete info either. The one exception is to ask bell services for a Disney "ROAD MAP". Even with that one you kind of have to study it a bit.

Also, the Disney buses periodically have access to small access roads that you do not have access to (or at least they are not clearly marked.)

If you have a GPS, and plan to drive at ALL - it may well come in handy (so long as you don't forget it in your rental car!) A great time to use a GPS is going to a resort for dinner.

WDW is pretty huge. Most folks don't have any idea until they are there. Heck, even some of us who have been many times sometimes forget how big it is! That really is an advantage of using WDW transport, though I still maintain - there ARE times when driving yourself is much better.

Oh - just to clarify...at the other three parks, the parking lot is right up next to the park, so you can almost always park fairly close to the main gate unless the park is rather crowded and you arrive late.

If we're at one park for that day (no hopping), we'll drive in the morning to get a good spot. At lunch when we head back to the hotel we take the buses, and then take the bus back to the park after pool time. When the park closes our car is right there in front so we can just leave and not have to stand in line with a tired child. It's worked well for us so far. :thumbsup2

We're another one of the "drive to all parks except MK" families.
But one of the reasons is that we have always traveled with strollers and that is easier with a car. When we are stroller free, we might be more apt to take the buses more often.
