Should we have told our server this right away at 50's Prime Time? Cafe

Earlier today I went to the Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios with 3 friends of mine who live in Orlando. Anyway we had lunch at Liberty Tree Tavern and I was paying for my own meal, however right away we told our server and he was still able to give me the discount from the Tables In Wonderland card since he asked the manager and because one of my friends had the card. However at 50's Prime Time Cafe for dinner we forgot to mention the Tables In Wonderland card and when we did our server said I could not get the discount. It was no problem and we never mentioned I was able to get it earlier today, however could our server at Prime Time still given me the discount? I am just curious to find out if it's a yes or no answer and nothing more then that.

I'm not sure I understood the situation. I normally don't give my card until the end, although I try to let them know before they ring it up. I'd be surprised if they refused to apply the discount even if you wait until after they present the bill.

However, it has to be on one check. If you and your friend were doing separate checks, only they get the discount, not you. I had this situation before with extended family and after that, we did one check and settled up between ourselves later.

Let me try to be a bit more clear. At Liberty Tree Tavern I was still able to get the discount on my check, even though my friends were on a seperate check and were using the discount. At 50's Prime Time Cafe we were once again on seperate checks, however our serever could not give me the discount.

Good question.

The rules say one discount per table, and it is my experience that it had to be on one check.

I have never been declined the TIW discount except for the blockout dates (holidays). But I always tell them I have it at the beginning of the meal when they ask if I have any sort of disney meal plan or card.

Inretrospect here, I am not 100% certain it is one discount per table. But there is a maximum number of people per TIW discount, which you did not exceed. Perhaps they could not have do this because you had separate checks? Check the Passholder web site for info on the program.

Ugh. I learned quickly on my last trip in October that you tell the server about the Tables of Wonderland as the first words out of your mouth! Forgot "Hello" or anything - just blurt out you have the card! The couple of times I told them when the check came, I got eye rolls and a nasty condescending warning to never do that again, as it was quite clear the CM was pissed off that they would have to ring up the check again. Nice way to finish the meal. Lesson learned.

We also had a horrible time using the card at the Cape May Buffet. Our server never heard of it, and had no real idea what it was. :confused3

I am not surprised the OP had issues - some servers seem confused by it's whole existance!

It sounds to me as though the server at LTT was very generous in giving you the discount, considering that you had a separate check.

The rule for TIW is up to 10 people on one ticket and only one discount (per card) per table.

I agree, LTT spread a little pixie dust by extending the discount to you. Best bet for future dinners would be for your friends to order (and pay for) your extras with their discount and you can pay them back.

Agreed with all: you weren't entitled to the discount at LTT, because your meal was on a separate check.

FWIW, I never discuss the card until the bill arrives. I just put it in the folio with my credit card or room key, and everything just happens. Haven't had an eye roll yet.

I agree, have had no issues, they usually ask if we're on the plan and I say no, we're on the DDE, but there have been one or two times I forgot at the beginning and had no issues using it. Since it's 20% I usually tell the server to make the discount their tip. :)

... the tip is now added for all DDE/TiW meals. So if you tell them to add 20% now... they're getting a VERY nice tip:rotfl:

and if you're paying cash, how do they "make" you pay the auto gratuity? If you leave 16% do they chase you down for the rest? Just curious.

Whatever the 20% discount is, is what they get for their tip. So they get basically 2% more then it adds.

Actually he 1st had to check with the manager and he obviously said it was ok, so it was not all the doing of our server.

So, then, you are already aware that was a special deal at LTT and that it doesn't mean the other restaurants will do the same thing.

Before the DDE was open to everyone with an AP, servers use to be generous with allowing discounts on separate checks. But this has not been the case for at least 4 years. They are the opposite; with separate checks only the cardholder's check gets the discount. That is truly the norm. Anything different than that is rare.
