Should we cancel?

My DF and I made reservations last year to go to Disneyland 3/9-3/11. As time has marched on more and more attractions will be closed--apparently in preparation for the 50th celebration. So far during our time Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, the Railroad, Mr. Lincoln and Tiki Birds will be closed. Almost everything at DCA will be open.

What should we do? I have never been to DL before and would hate to miss some classic rides. DF used to live in LA so he has pretty much seen everything but DCA. We had made reservations at The Grand Californian and this 3 day trip will cost over $800. Is it worth it with so many rides closed? I also imagine the park will be in disarray in prep for the 50th.

Are you able to postpone your trip until the 50th celebration begins? That's what I would try to do. Especially since it's your first trip, you want it to be extra special and magical. The only plus side of your current trip date is that the crowds shouldn't be much of anything during that time.

I wouldn't cancel if it were me. Really isn't much closed...space mtn. has been closed for a long time, so everyone has missed it. Splash is the only one you might feel you have missed (it was closed when we went and were not overly concerned - were just happy to be at DL!). The railroad is handy to get to one area of the park from another, but not a big deal to miss. Mr. Toad is a dark ride similar to all the others - not a big deal to miss. Not sure how important the Mr. Lincoln is to you - but to me it is not one I would be going to even if open! LOL. The tiki birds are cute, but wouldn't make me to change my dates!
I would go - but thats me! I guess it depends on how badly you want those attractions. We really missed out - Haunted Mansion, Small World, Splash, Tiki, Space and the Railroad were closed. Not to mention with the rain - it shut down another half of the park....but we still had a blast!

We're going during that same time period, and yes, it's a bummer that all that stuff will be closed, but for me, being a DL first-timer, I don't care that much. I just want to be there in whatever capacity they'll let me be.

Although I was just going to post if there were any rumors flying around about Splash opening up early.

I called a few months ago to see how much it would be for us to chage our airfare and it would cost us 130 dollars a ticket extra. We have six tickets to change so I said "No thanks". We were disappointed in having so many rides closed and no fireworks at first but we decided the trip will still be fun. My only concern is the castle being covered. I hope it is not!

I hear you on the castle. I can take almost anything, but I REALLY wanted a picture of me in front of that castle. Maybe we could start a grass roots campaign to uncover the castle now.

DD18 went today and the castle was in full view...but Splash and many other rides were closed. It was also rainy. But she had a blast with her girlfriend. I say any day at Disney is a GREAT day

GO!

You will discover the moment you enter Main Street that the single biggest attraction in Disneyland is the park itself - the rides are just a bonus.

Of all the rides you mention only Splash Mountain is a real loss. Space Mountain sounds fun (it was also closed when we were there) but not an essential. The others are minor attractions which, with the exception of Mr Toad, we either didn't do, or couldn't do, but didn't miss. As mentioned above, Toad is similar to other rides, the best of which is by far Peter Pan.

Missing Splash Mountain is a loss, but it will leave you something to really look forward to next time you go (and there will be a next time, I can assure you!)

I'd still go. I've gone when rides were down and I considered postponing... but I'm glad we went. DL is an experience! Go and you will be glad you did. But I warn you- you will get home and have to start planning your next visit!

Does anyone know if Mr. Toad's Wild Ride will be open by 4-19-05. This was DH favorite ride in Disney World which is where we usually go. This trip to Disneyland is rare for us and we were really looking forward to experiencing Mr. Toad again.

It's amazing what you can find on the net... I just found this site ... http://riderefurbs.com/ ... which indicates Toad will come out of rehab on 4-18-05. Hope that schedule doesn't slip any.

I vote go. We are. I hope that schedule is right I planned this visit around my DD2's college spring break. That's the only time she can get off to do anything. She couldn't go on our Wonder cruise last year because of school When I offered DL instead she jumped at it We'll be there 3/12-3/16 no matter what!

I would still go, but my kids are all real small, so those attractions that are closed really wouldn't matte that much to them...

I'd go. There are so many classic rides that you'll miss if you don't go! The list you gave isn't really that many rides to be down in an off-season. The first time my family went, the rides that were down were:

Storybookland Canal Boats
Haunted Mansion
Casey Jr. Circus Train
The Matterhorn
The Disneyland Railroad
The Columbia
The King Arthur Carousel

I've made three trips to DL, and I've never been there when the Matterhorn was open. (This year, for SURE!)

Of course, take this advice with a grain of salt--I'd certainly be willing to make another trip to see DL when these other rides were open!

We had forgot to mention the trip to L.A. was for a wedding.

Disney was icing....


But I will still regret the total # of rides (and train transportation) being closed. I don't want my DF to be let down. Or worse yet, to think that the experience could be as vast as WDW.
