I have to admit, the fact that these board posts show up on search engines annoys me. I am a member of another board and the administrators don't allow it.

I know that public boards are...well, public. Still, I would like to keep my comments a little less visible.

(Don't believe your comments are hitting the search engines? Do a google search for "twinkle toe shoes seizures".

What do ya think? Should the DIS take us out of the search engines?:surfweb:

Uh, you're posting on the internet and you can't get much more public than that. If there's something you don't want public, then don't post it. I can see where some sites would restrict search engines, but Disney talk probably isn't high on the anonymity scale, LOL!

to be honest, when I need to search the boards, I often go to google, enter my search terms and add the word disboards. Works every time--unlike the search feature here on the boards.

Well, this board is supported by advertising. Advertisers want their ads to been seen by as many people as possible, so that isn't likely to ever happen.
Also, we don't know who you are, only you know who you are, all we see is a screen name. So your comments are anonymous.

Why on Earth would an ad supported message board want their pages to be returned on a web search?

Oh, that is right, because page views = ad revenue.

No, that wouldn't make sense at all. The point is to increase traffic to the site.

If I don't want comments public, I would never post them on the internet.

Come to think of it...the other board that I'm on is a subscription service.

Me, too. I rarely use the DIS search feature, since it stopped working several years ago.

If you don't want others to be able to search what you post, either don't post it, or use different names in different forums than your real life name, so people can't track you from forum to forum, and don't post real life pictures.

I got lectured & reamed out by former D.A., Linda Fairstein, about 15 years ago, regarding careful vigilance about what I post on the web and to whom. She served as head of the sex crimes unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's office, prosecuted the FIRST internet connected rape in Manhattan, (if not the U.S.) and was the real life inspiration for the Alex Cabot character in Law & Order: SVU.

This discussion happened way before social networking has morphed into what it is today. But, I still follow her advice/lecturing to the letter. I still do not have Facebook, MySpace, Twitter accounts. Nor do I have a blog. I have several email accounts, so, if necessary, any weird emails can be tracked back to which group/organization, or real life situation they may have come from.

When I counsel abused women, I pretty much caution them about the same stuff. We live in a city of wackos. Some of these women already have dangerous people interested in finding them. We don't need wackos following us in real life, from what we voluntarily post on the web. Safely posting on the web is YOUR own responsibility.

This.

No...'cause otherwise how would I search for anything on here since the search "function" doesn't work? :confused3

Actually, google keeps track of the web pages you visit most frequently and gear your searches towards that. That's why DIS topics will show up in your results.

Big brother is watching your every move. And many people are angry over the amount of information google stores about it's users, but it's a very very small handful compared to the amount of users that use it every day, not knowing how much is actually being stored about you.

Have you all tried using the Search Feature lately? I haven't had any problems with it for quite some time, and I have done a lot of searches in the last few months. The Advanced Search is very helpful to narrow down results. You might give it a try. :)

Really? Have you all tried it recently? It's been working great.

I agree. I'm only irritated when I'm not logged in. I hate those scrambled words everyone uses now.

I voted no. It doesn't bother me at all that my comments can be found on a search engine. I wouldn't post something that I'd be worried about anyone who knows me IRL finding out about.

No, it doesn't bother me. I'm sure it was listed somewhere in the terms when I registered so if it was something I really cared about I would have made sure I read those and not register if I found they allow it.

Ironically, Linda Fairstein has a huge internet presence including a blog and facebook AND tosses a bunch of her own personal stuff into her books.
