Should the Pope apologize??

Considering the backlash and in the effort to hopefully broker some peace in the situation I think apologizing is the obvious best way.

Dawn - the savage comment was uncalled for but it's typical for you - you are a pretty good :stir:

"Uninformed remarks" like this are why some Muslims firebombed some Christian churches today.

Ratzinger DID NOT call Muhammad [sic] anything; all he did was quote someone ELSE from history.

Pope Benedict's choice of quotes is something he obviously regrets. It triggered firebombings afterall--but let's not misconstrue the situation any further by saying these are teachings of his or something like that.

What has the Muslim community all PO'ed (as if the radicals within that group weren't already mighty PO'ed) is a quote--not an actual proclamation from the Pope.
EXACTLY :worship:

No. Not what I meant at all. Dawn isn't going to incite a group of Christians to burn down a Mosque, at least I hope not. It's the general acceptance of those that do have that feeling that I find wrong. I'm not against discussion. We should, in general, find better ways to address this besides all this talk about "wiping out a religion" that I keep hearing. Sounds pretty volatile to me.
Thanks for making your point a little clearer for me.

My question then is, what good does our calm discussions in the West do to control those who burn churches and threaten others who try to have thoughtful exchanges of ideas that they may not always agree with? Violence in the name of religion is wrong. That was one of the central ideas in the Pope's words. Are they rioting that that is not correct? Should that alarm the West?

As security was beefed up around Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday night, the Mujahideen's Army movement in Iraq threatened to carry out a suicide attack against the Pope in revenge for his comments about Islam and jihad.

On a website used by rebel movements in Iraq, a message posted by the Mujahideen's Army said members of the organization would "smash the crosses in the house of the dog from Rome."

I'm curious Dawn, does calling Muslims savages help make the world a better place?

Probably nothing, but certainly better than riling people up, wether we think they deserve it or not. Our two cents isn't going to change anything except to perhaps make things worse. I don't hear this administration posturing about this controversy. Wisely, I think.

How does attacking Dawn add to the discussion or make the world a better place?

I just want to know how she thinks this helps? I think it is a fair question.

So we should all do/say nothing and hope it all goes away in fear of what else may happen? What if, God forbid, a suicide bomber hits the Pope? The West should just stomach that too? Where is the line drawn? What is absolutely unacceptable?

It might be fair if you at least answered the question and THEN added that you thought her wording was not conducive to calm, rational discussion. Instead, you ignored the whole point of the thread and simply called her out.

Emotions run high on this subject. I am very strongly against the Pope groveling to those who demand a "personal apology". They chose to pick apart his words and take them out of context.

I said before I don't have the answers. I just feel that overeaction on our part probably isn't the best idea. You have to consider our position in the world right now, and no, I don't want to start that debate, but it's something we can't sweep under the rug. What do you propose? Just exactly who and what do we "go after" and how do we do it?

OK, the Pope is not a stupid man, at least I hope he is not. He would have to know that his words would spark controversy. If someone posted the same sort of remark about Jesus Christ, there would be people on here screaming for their head.

If you want to have a calm, rational discussion about a topic that is obviously as heated as this one, at least have the courtesy to refrain from calling an entire group of people a name that is sure to cause more problems.

Sorry if it upsets you that I "called her out", as you said, on it.

from page 1, "savages" = the ones in the streets screaming and burning churches. I'll add the ones calling for the Pope to be killed asap. "Savages" is a better description than "Muslims," and it's exactly what I'd call Christian groups if they tried that around here.

CNN just reporting that The Pope will make a "special" speech tomorrow to address this issue.

Okay, forgive me I have been at a wedding reception all evening filling up on Miller Lite. I just got home and logged on and I would like to comment....without flaming. He!! no, the Pope should not apologize. Someone finally needs to tell it like it is. Okay, now I can go to bed.

Frankly I am tired of the whole world walking on eggshells for fear that we might offend the Muslims.

I am entitled to my beliefs, which include allowing others to believe as they choose AS LONG AS THEIR BELIEFS AND/OR ACTIONS DON'T INFRINGE UPON MY RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS (and killing me would do so...) and their actions are consistent in cementing my way of thinking.

Why are the so-called "peaceful" Muslims so silent? :confused3 And not just this time, but always???

I had a good friend when I was younger who is Muslim. He used to joke about the Jihad. Well, I thought he was joking. Maybe he wasn't.... :confused3

I don't live in fear of them. I just don't. I am right with my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and if I am called home to Him at any time I am ready. There is a better place waiting for me. I believe that wholeheartedly.

They can believe whatever they want but when they start using my religious leader as a puppet for their lunacy then, in my opinion, they can go straight to hell. I hope that the Pope doesn't apologize. The fate of the world is in God's hands.

The Pope did not say (or post) any remarks about Mohammed or anybody else. The words in question were a quote from someone in history. Period.

He could apologize for a poor choice of quotes, but still...

Isn't it ironic that these nuts (who are fire-bombing Christian churches) are bent out of shape over being accused of being violent?

Their actions aren't exactly proving the original quote to be inaccurate.
