Okay now who voted YES? :confused3  Who is this "lunarlady" you speak of...

And those that cited those cases where a couple grows up and falls in love and marries and finds out they are brother and sister.........ARE SO FAR AND FEW BETWEEN!!!

Doesn't situations like this, when children are ultimately conceived, cause for serious issues with mental health, depression....and the like...:sad2:

I don't know. The biggest argument here it that their children could have genetic defects. But who's to stop these people from procreating anyway? :confused3

I said undecided.

I lean toward yes because I think marriage is nothing more than a legal contract between two parties which confers a crap load of benefits and responsibilities on them. I don't see any reason that blood relations should not be able to have such contracts--why shouldn't two siblings living together get to file their tax return jointly and get health insurance benefits for one another?

But I also lean toward no for a few reasons. First as everyone pointed out there are the genetic issues to worry about. There are a few reasons this is a problematic reason not to allow it though. A) they could have a sexless marriage if all they want is the legal benefits, B) they could be infertile or a same-sex sibling couple, and C) I would never think that having a really high chance of having a baby with severe genetic problems would be a reason to stop two non-siblings from marrying, so it seems inconsistent to use this reason to prevent two opposite sex siblings from marrying. Second there is the problem of instituting a practice in which children are raised together as siblings while thinking of one another as potential sex partners/future spouses. I think this could make for a very problematic environment for raising children--imagine how it might impact sibling relationships. But this argument will only apply to cases in which the siblings were raised together--not the talk show/adoption cases.

Really in those cases I can't say I have any objection to the couple getting married. I find it gross, but I think my gross-out factor is not in the least relevant to how the state ought to treat people.

I guess this just makes me feel more strongly about the state getting out of the marriage business and instead being only in the civil union business, where a civil union is just that--a civil contract between two people for their private reasons just like any other contract people enter into.

Hopefully common sense and decency would stop them. Omg the thought of a brother and sister playing hide the salami gives me the creepies eepsies.

BUT WAIT....isn't this AGAINST THE LAW....:confused3 :scared1:

How can you get a marriage license for a bro and a sis:scared1: .... , they will ARREST them in the court house as they attempt to get a license, RIGHT????

Well you would think, wouldn't you. But I doubt these people are saying "you know, the state won't let us get married, so perhaps we shouldn't sleep together either".

Honestly I hope so. I hope they give them some type of counseling also.

No, they wouldn't be arrested. They wouldn't get the license.

What a bunch of "intolerant" people.

I mean if 2 people truly love one another then why shouldnt they be allowed to marry? What if both are infertile or have no intentions of having children, who are we to stop 2 loving people from marrying one another?

How can you impose your moral views upon two siblings that love one another and wnat to be married? After all, isnt love what it is all about? :rolleyes1

What if a brother and sister who weren't in love with each other (they both had normal relationships with other people) wanted to get married JUST because of the legal benefits such as insurance?

I don't care what kind of spin people put on it, that's some sick kind of luvin!

I did not see the show. Did they grow up together? Did they ever date anyone else?

I think its disgusting. You don't have sex with your sibling. You just don't!

Adam and Eve- that's just a story. It's fiction. (But I know that's a whole 'nother debate!)

I have no scientific proof to back this up, but I think there is something inate in us which makes us not be able to fall romantically in love with a sibling. We're just made that way, our brain psychology normally doesn't work that way. I'm not talking about siblings who didn't know they were siblings; in those cases they don't feel/see each other as brother and sister. But the ones who were raised together, well I don't think I've ever heard of a case where they fell into romantic love and wanted to get married/have kids together. Incest happens all the time in this world, where brothers/sisters/fathers impregnate each other, but that's not from love, it's from pure sex and lust.
