While we wait for the official word to come Tomorrow, I'd like see what fellow Diser's have to say on the matter. Should McGwire be heading into the Hall with Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn? Should the rumor of steroid use sufficient to deny him entry on the first ballot? Is there enough smoke surrounding McGwire's accomplishments that he never make it to Cooperstown?

He really hurt his chances with his testimony at the Congressional hearings. I wouldn't be surprised if he's not a first-year inductee. As for the steroid suspicions, there's no way to test him now or know for sure. With Canseco's assertions and his own bumbling at the hearing, he has seriously damaged his reputation and chances for unanimous induction. He's probably waiting to see how this first balloting goes. If he's denied soundly, he might make some statement or write a book or something in his defense or even confess. That may be years in coming. It took Pete Rose forever to come clean. He's waiting to test the waters before doing anything though.

All of this aside, it's just a warm-up for an even bigger fire-storm......Barry Bonds......*shudder* How McGwire's situation is handled will be small compared to that eventual debate.

Maybe they should open a separate wing in Cooperstown for those who achieved records or fame but with the cloud of steroid use on their legacies. Cheaters Hall of Shame?

Steroids might not have been illegal in baseball at the time they were using them, but they were still illegal in the USA.

I do think that there is a double standard though-the San Diego Chargers player who was suspended for violating the NFL's steroid policy isn't getting anywhere near the negative press that the baseball players are.

I agree 100%, and if you follow his career, all those homeruns came after he started taking "suppliments". As far as I'm concerned, he cheated the game, and doesn't deserve to be in the HOF.

Take the steroids out of the equation for this year anyway. A first ballot HOFer should be a complete, and special player. For that reason alone, this ballot shouldn't be close.

We can talk about the 'roids next year. If he makes it first ballot, steroids or not, it weakens the HOF for everyone else. He was a one trick pony.
