Should I send back my S2IS?

I got this Canon S2IS a few weeks ago and like the fool I am, neglected to try it prior to going to WDW. I took along my other P&S and had lots of time to read how to use the Canon S2IS, along with my rechargeable batteries etc. I just could not get the viewfinder to work. It was awful. I programmed the memory card (or whatever it is called), but I couldn't see anything at all. If I kept trying and trying to use the little button/dial control to shoot pictures over and over and over, eventually it would come on. And then it would work for a while, but if I turned it off for a few hours, I could not get the viewfinder to work again - not with either one. And then I had this issue with some of the pictures being totally white shadows even with the sun at my back. I used a Canon AE1 back in the 80's and I never had a problem with a Canon like I did with this one. Is it me or is there something wrong with the camera? Do I call Canon or send it back to be fixed?

Help. I am ready to buy an S3IS at this point. I am so disappointed.

It is absolutely, totally and completely NOT normal for a camera's LCD/EVF to not work 100% of the time the camera is turned on.

Even if you've got the power-saving mode set to a ridiculously short period of time (and, I don't think you can set it lower than about 30sec on an S2/S3) it should still come on immediately when you start pushing the shutter button.

Take it back to the store (if they'll accept it) or send it back to Canon for warranty repair (it should be 1 year).

Taking completely white pictures *might* be a further problem; but you could also have been in Manual mode and had the shutter speed set slow -- you'd be horribly overexposing everything. Without being able to see the EVF/LCD it might have been impossible to know what your settings were!

Take it back!!

I had the camera on auto and I could see the picture in the view finder - but the picture I took was totally white - it was awful. I was so disappointed. I guess that some cameras can be lemons or they wouldn't sell refurbished cameras, right? Never saw anything like it. I went through the settings and made sure I had them set the way they were supposed to be. I couldn't even find my problems in the troubleshooting sections. One thing for sure, my batteries had great power! Had to with all the problems I was having.

Good thing I had my other canon P&S with me.

I agree, it sounds like a problem with the camera itself. You should be able to set it to "auto", hit the shutter button, and get a half-way decent photo, without having to deal with viewfinder problems, etc.

Definitely exchange it if possible!
