Should I sell my Christmas dishes?

Hi! We have been doing some major purging/destashing over the past few months. I've been listing things on local FB groups & Craigslist & I am having a yard sale next weekend. So, I've got over 50 boxes packed up ready to sell & I'm really torn on selling my Christmas dishes. I LOVE the dishes-but we haven't used them in about 8 years. One reason is because when we host dinner, we have 9-15 adults, and only 8 place settings, so we have been using paper plates. The other reason is that they are hard to get to in the attic-but one of the main goals of all out purging is so we will be able to get to the stuff we would use. However, I'm not quite sure how I would use them-other than use them as our regular dishes during the Holidays. I know I probably won't get much for them, which makes me want to keep them, but then I think "but we used them twice in 10 years, but I luv them".... Plus-they were one of the nicest things we got when we got married. What do u think??

If you LOVE them, promise yourself you will use them this year. Make room in your cabinet and use them every day. It won't seem like as much of a hassle as it does to get them out for one meal. :thumbsup2

I have a set of snowflake (not really Christmas) dishes that I love. I swap them out for my regular dishes the day after Thanksgiving and use them until mid-February or so. They are not super fancy, so I still use my china when I host Christmas. I am lucky to have a big china hutch, so I have room to store whatever I'm not using, and it's easy to swap them out.

Maybe keep them for one more holiday season, see if you can find some way to use them, and then evaluate?

I can't imagine not using them when you're having a big family meal. Even if it's a mix between normal china and the special china, with them scattered around between people, I think it would be cool.

I almost got rid of my mom's china that I inherited, because it's not my taste (her Lenox was cream with gold and a floral pattern...my pattern was plain white with platinum). But I held onto it b/c I don't live near replacements.com and would have to ship it, which is a big expense, and now I'm glad I did. We don't "entertain", but even with just the 3 of us I'll mix and match it, and I *love* doing that. Plus, she had the serving dishes (which are SO expensive) and I don't have those in my pattern, so it's all very convenient. :)

Great job destaching ! How wonderful to be able to part with so many things ! I think that I would keep the Christamas dishes. If they were given to you as a wedding gift and you have kept them this long, then why not eep them so that you can pass them on to your children? I am all about destashing and not having clutter but sometimes, if you really LOVE it and it does mean alot to you~ then it is worh keeping.

I like the idea of mixing it with other dishes or using them throughout the winter..try doing that this season and then decide if you can really part with them.

Our Christmas dishes come out on Thanksgiving weekend and we use them every day until shortly after New Years. Doing the switch every year is a little bit of a hassle but I love using them each year.

If you love them, keep them. Why not?
I mean, serve a nice breakfast on them for goodness sake. Christmas is not just one day. You can make all kind of meals on them. Have a nice season. :)

I would use them every day.

When you host a party of 9-15, I would use them and have my family or all the kids use the paper plates.

Once you have your sale, if you have room for them in the kitchen or dining room, then keep them. If you're still stashing them in the attic, I think you have your answer.

Any chance you have Porsgrund Hearts & Pines?

I would use them at least one more year. Use them the entire month of Dec. Since you don't have enough pieces for your entire group get some plain plates (inexpensive) in a color that would compilment what you have.

No, don't sell them -- you say you love them. Instead, buy more. Seriously, if the problem is that you don't have enough to set a full table, you need more. Perhaps JUST plates rather than full place settings. Plates store in next to no space, and you'll enjoy being able to use them when you host holiday meals.

The fact that you are getting rid of so many things, yet came he to question if you should keep the dishes make the answer obvious to me:)

Keep them! You want to, you have kept them this long and now you will have more room. Really, I see no reason to get rid of them. People can get carried away with cleaning out just like anything else. It sounds like you would be getting rid of them just to have empty space in the attic.

I am another who uses my Christmas dishes the entire holiday season. We take out the everyday dishes and bring out the holiday. Love it! But for big gatherings we use disposable plates and just use the serving dishes. Makes for easier clean-up.

I think the folks suggesting keeping them at least this year have the right idea. use them then see how you feel.

Another vote for keeping the dishes. You can always use nice paper plates along with the real dishes as well for large gatherings.

I always set up my dining table at Christmas with my Christmas china just like they do at the department stores. Don't use the dining table much and it adds a festive touch to that room. People always comment how cute it looks.

Last year, I finally moved my 12 place setting wedding dishes (whole wheat Mikasa) from my buffet to my basement in preparation for selling them. I love my Christmas dishes, use them all through the season and get loads of compliments on them. If you love yours, keep them and just purchase additional place settings in plain colours and mix and match! My wedding set had been sitting unused for years (it is large and clunky), as I have another Mikasa pattern (garden harvest) which I use during the rest of the year! Best thing I ever did! :thumbsup2

My sister uses her holiday dishes from the day after Thanksgiving to the end of Christmas break...she has school aged children. Maybe give that a try. If you really like them and use them then don't throw them out, if you end up not using them this year for a purpose like that then sell them next year.

Well I solved the problem of never using...I bring them out Thanksgiving or before and use them for months, why do you only have to use them for Christmas...who wrote that rule...same with my Dpt 56 houses I leave them up until March now.... hey when you get old you do what you want and don't care what people think...:)
