Should I say something to my post office?

I don't complain to people a lot, but I am wondering about this one. The mail came this morning while I was picking up DD#1 from summer gym. I ran home to drop her off and when I backed out of the driveway, I noticed the mailbox was wide open--with our replacement checks right in the front! Now I assume most people know what that little brown box is, right? With all of the identity theft going around, someone driving by could have just grabbed that box. The other thing is, during the school year the mailbox would have been open for about 4 more hours, but luckily I'm on vacation.
I don't understand why the mailman would have left the box wide open. Should I call and say something, or forget about it?

I guess I would assume that it just didn't shut tight and fell open.... not that it was deliberately left open. One time thing??? I would forget about it..............P

It probably didn't close all the way when he closed it.

If I were you, I would check to make sure it closes properly, then not worry about it any more.

I delivered mail, and it is possible it popped back open, but I would think it was VERY unlikely that he intentionally left it open.

Speaking from experience, because I used to be a "Mailman", I really doubt that it was done intentionally. It is part of the routine to open box, put mail in, and close it. Actually, without even thinking. It may not be the case, but I would find it hard to believe. Does your box close easily and stay closed? The only reason I ask is that some boxes don't stay closed after closing them. And others are hard to close. Maybe he/she closed it too hard and it came back down. It is hard to say. If you do decide to call, whoever you speak to will let your carrier know about it. Then, depending on your carrier, it may not make a difference, or he/she could get an attitude with you. I have seen it many times. Another thing you could do is either leave a note (just make sure it isn't his/her day off) or try to talk to him/her. Especially if you word it that you were concerned as to how/why the box was open. Good Luck!

OK, that's what I was thinking. The box does stay closed unless you try to just whip it shut quickly. I did a mailbox rehab a couple of summers ago--new paint, numbers, etc. Our red flag had one of the nails fall out and needs another one, but other than that the box is fine. It was probably just bad timing that it happened today with my checks inside!

Yeah, I agree, for a one time deal I wouldn't say anything but it was bad luck that it was the day your replacement checks came in. It's a good thing it wasn't raining either, that would have been stinky too.
