Should I risk staying at Disneyland Hotel?

I've read too many reviews about construction and dated rooms (not being able to guarantee a renovated room till check in). It would be really magical to stay here, but the magic would be lost if we get stuck in an old room and without the pool. Renos are supposed to be completed summer 2011 (with pool renos completing in 2012) and we're visiting in March 2011.

Any advice? Just book somewhere else?

Welcome to the boards! Have you thought about staying at the GCH. It is a beautiful hotel with an excellent location. It is tough to plan a stay at the DLH for most right now, not knowing what is going on with the timelines.

If you can, try to stay at the GCH! It really is amazing.

I stayed at the DLH while they were doing construction on the first building and really didn't notice any negative effects of the construction. This was during Labor day/half marathon weekend though so it is possible they stopped construction for the weekend. They also hadn't started the pool reno yet.

That being said, I've never had a problem with the old rooms. They weren't AMAZING, but I always found them to be comfortable and of good quality.

Have you also thought of Paradise Pier? It is the cheaper of all hotels but my personal standby. Again, it isn't amazing, certainly not near GCH quality, but I love the decor and the rooms looking out over DCA have great views.

I'd agree you may not have the pools but your chance for a renovated room next spring is really high. That is when they will be finishing up they may not have any old rooms left that they aren't working on by that point.

I thought about the GCH but it's a lot more $$$. So far, the Residence Inn maingate is looking most appealing...but no characters and fun surprises to make their first experience extra special.

Any tips on getting better deals on the GCH? We'll be staying March 20-27 (give or take a day or two).

Wait until they have specials for next spring. They are doing the 40% off this summer/fall, maybe they will have something off next spring?

I would advise staying somewhere within walking distance wether you stay on property or not.

expedia.com - last week I checked and the GCH was $213 (or $203?) a night through expedia which is also the AP rate right now. That was for a weekday. We're staying at the DH in a few weeks and can report back on the construction noise etc.

Btw- we're kinda hoping for an old room as the balcony still opens and I just love opeing it and hearing the laughter from the pool/parks and the breeze... but of course we'll be happy w/ a new room too.

And the service is so incredible, if you are not happy w/ your room and are respectful and polite down at the front desk, I'm sure they will do whatever they can to accomodate you.

I myself, love to spy the construction and see what they're doing, so I don't mind a view of a bulldozer. (The soundproofing when the door is closed is excellent)

Rather than booking GCH, you can try to rent from a DVC owner.

I previously enquired about the same dates as yours and a Studio unit at VGC (Villas side of GCH) was available. Cost is USD$260 per night.

With the pool being closed, they will surely let you swim at the Grand or PPH.

But I personally would just stay at PPH. Big airy bright rooms, nice staff...not as expensive as the Grand...
