I am so torn. Technically I have no "boss". They are replacing my boss, who is a director and left, but the girl doesn't start until January. I have been kinda reporting to our President. I have tomorrow off but we have an 8 hour drive a head of us and I have no work. I feel guilty if I leave and don't tell her, but if I tell her, chances are I won't get paid for this afternoon (I am on salary though). What would you do?

I don't really see how you can not get paid if you are on salary. If you don't have anything to do today then maybe you should leave. Maybe go to the President and say "Hey, I really don't have anything left to do here. If you don't have anything for me do you mind if I skip out a bit early?"

The problem is I did that for tomorrow. I though we were closed on Friday but we are open until noon. She made me fill out a leave request and take 3 hours vacation time. I guess I just feel guilty about leaving early and not telling her.

Everyone has a supervisor of some sort. Unless they approve your leaving early, you should stay until quitting time.

I didn't say I don't have a supervisor. It is just that the person who would by my direct supervisor is not in her position yet. Thanks for the advice.

You sort of answered your own question here. If you feel guilty, then your conscience must be telling you it's wrong to do. There's probably something you can do to keep yourself occupied.

Yea I know. I guess I will probably stick around till 4, afterall I didn't take lunch. I am just dreading the traffic. My job has been super slow lately, and I know it will pick up in January, but I really am runing out of things to do. :rotfl:

My boss just came around and asked me why I was still here. Told me to take off and have a great Christmas. But we are closed tomorrow. Nice little surprise, but I am on salary also.

Aww, I am jealous. Our president doesn't work in our office, so fat chance that will happen. Also, no one knows how to do my job, but me and I have had quite a bit of vacation lately. Oh well, can't wait until 4!!

Hey, I'm a salaried employee but when I leave work early, I still have to take vacation time or leave without pay.

If you have a boss that says go home and lets you still get paid-know how lucky you are. I saw my name marked on his little calendar - he makes sure that I take vacation hours or no pay. I took the no pay-for Friday afternoon.

Yea that is pretty much how I am. My old boss would let me leave if I was done working. He had the idea that if you were doing your job, and doing it well then why not? It's not quite like that anymore. It is super tough because I am left with 0 vacation hours for our January vacation.

If you are exempt, they can't dock you if you work a partial day. You do have to take vacation time (or go without pay) if you take an entire day off, but if you work even 5 minutes of a day and then leave, they have to pay you for the whole day.

If you are non-exempt, I am not sure. I am exempt.

Regarding the OP: I'd stay. It's only 2.66 more hours.

There's no one you can ask? Could another manager -- one you don't report to -- give an OK to leave a couple of hours early, especially when all your work is done?

This place sounds incredibly tough to me.

It's not usually. See I work in a real estate brokerage, so most of the staff are agents (independent contractors). I am one of the few admin type positions and usally they are only 2 in our department (myself and the director who is being replaced). I think I will just suck it up and stay till 3:30/4sih.
