Should I Have Said Something?

We stayed at the BCV over the Memorial Day holiday last May. While out at the pool, that weekend, I saw a group of teenagers show up and grab a table. They didn't have any towels, and I heard them say something about how they couldn't get towels because of the cast member checking room keys. One of them also mentioned to avoid the slide, as they'd might be asked for an armband. They dumped their gear and headed off to the pool. It was obvious they weren't guests. The pool quickly filled up and there were no tables or chairs left open. I watched family after family come down and wander around looking for someplace to sit. I didn't say a thing, because I didn't want to come off as a busy body, but I was sorely tempted to point out to some those guests wandering around that the table next to me was occupied by bunch of free loaders.

Yes, you should have said something....

Sorry, but letting kids get away with things like this just brings on adults who think the rules don't apply to them. I have and will continue to say something....

Personally, I would have.

There's a reason why there is no Pool Hopping to BCV!

Yeah, I know I should have. I sat there debating what I should do, but I guess I just lacked the self confidence to get up and say something. I was also slightly irritated that the CM's didn't seem to be monitoring the situation very closely. I know they're busy, but I saw several people without armbands, and never saw anyone challenge them.

 Good Morning Olaf! Was this May of 05 that this occured? :scratchin

I agree with Carol. Sometimes teens become very brave without
proper guidance. Unless in this case their parents do the same. Saying something at that time would probably have been best.

When at SSr the last time, we also discussed that same scenario. What would keep anyone from walking over from DTD and going to the pools, especially the leisure pools. We never saw any cast members at the leisure pools, so what would prevent anyone from using them. Seems like there would be a check system in place to prevent this. Maybe
gates to swipe room cards to allow entry. DVC cards to pool hop. It's not fair to those paying for the pool accomodations not to be able to enjoy them to the fullest , while there are others not abiding to allowed pool guest rules.

No, no, it was Memorial Day weekend last year, and the pool was packed.

I probably wouldn't have said anything to the teenagers, but I would have gone over to the CM who was giving people armbands.

I read it as if the statement refers to May of 2005, a year ago. Was just curious as to why wait a year to reconcider what should have been done.
Thanx,

It's too bad one of the families looking for a place to sit didn't just move the teen's stuff and take the table. I have often thought it would be nice to have some type of discreet cubicle set-up around the pool areas where people that don't necessarily want a table or lounge chair could put their towels, shoes, etc. without leaving them on the ground. I think this would free up many tables. I also agree that CM's need to be more proactive about checking room keys.

I like the cubicle idea. I honestly feel guilty tying up a chair just for a place to set my coverup, flipflops, and towel, when I plan to spend nearly the entire time in the water.

I'm pretty easy-going, but since it was both extremely obvious (couldn't get towels because they weren't guests) and taking facilities from paying guests, I would have said something to a CM.

As for the CMs, I'm of two minds. On one hand, I do wish they'd be more consistant with their enforcement, but I understand that Disney would rather look the other way to avoid offending paying guests who might not appreciate being challenged to prove their legality. This is why saying something to the CM is best, as then they have a valid cover: "I was responding to a guest complaint."

Be well!

I think this is right on target. It's up to us to take the first step.

For one thing, the pool CMs I've seen have all been lifeguards, and their primary responsibility is pool safety -- they probably see themselves as lifesavers, not chair police. Secondly, I'm quite sure the laid-back enforcement attitude is not accidental. I'd be willing to bet they've been told not to rock the boat unless they are responding to a complaint. Most people follow the rules, and if noone complains, a lot of organizations prefer not to seek out conflict.

How many times do we hear heart-rending wails on these boards about crises from housekeeping to pool chairs, where the poster is so distraught they're going to sell their DVC membership -- but when you ask them if they said anything, they say, "Um...no.?" As the great American philosopher Pogo said, "We have met the enemy...and it is US!"

In the situation OP describes, I would have certainly have asked a CM to intervene.

Oh, I've reconsidered it plenty. It was just after reading several messages here on various subjects that I decided to throw it out there. I know what I should have done, I was just more concerned with how the CM and other people would view me--seems pretty silly in retrospect. I've read many messages here, over the years, where DVC members have been challenged at various pools, that coupled with the fact the SAB is the most popular pool, made me think that the CM's would have been more aggressive. In the future, I will be more proactive.

Yes! Turn 'em in every time something like that happens!

Well see if you post this on DVC you will get support, as most of us are basically rule abiding, card toting members of the society that believes that what one does affects us all.

However if you go over to the Resorts board and post this, you will be branded the Disney Pool Police, the Moral Cops, someone that is so petty and has no life.

Those are the guilty trying to wear you down so you won't report them. Please don't let them carry you over to the dark side. :thumbsup2

I probabily would have gone up and said something.. :smooth: That's dues money paying for pool maintance for the free loaders...

The same problem exists at VB and the HHI Beach House... DVC has installed card swipping gates to get in... :thumbsup2 It doesn't stop everyone because people will always sneak in, but it sends a clear message..
