I am 39 and boy I feel like a noose is around my neck! I went right into a "career" job after HS, never did college. College wasn't discussed in my house, 6 kids, single Mom. I make great $$ and benefits and all that. Peole would die for what I have here. I have 16 yrs in (lost 3 for having kids, would be 19), need 30 for full retirement.... But this is a mindless, boring and stupid place! Big business and times have changed. When I started, it was a great place, now it it mis-managed and I hate it. No movement within (UNION) and I am like stuck in this crapola. BUTTTTTTTTTT they do pay 100% tuition here. I feel I better get using this benefit before it gets slashed. And my youngest is 13 so I can afford the time to take a class here and there.

I would love to come out with a new career and leave this godforsaken place!!

Ok so how do I start? What do I do? I don't even know what I would want to do and I am 39!!!!!

My skills are people (BUT NOT MEDICAL NO NURSE HERE), organization-big time, investigations- love it! And I love off shift work. I hate 9-5 desk stuff. So HELP I am sooo stuck!

I just know all you people can help stare me!

TIA

First of all, life is waaaaay too short to do something you don't want to do. I say think of something you enjoy doing and find a way to get paid for it.

There are points in our lives in which we doubt what we're doing (I know, it's happened to me). I sit in these classes that absolutely no bearing on my final career and yet I stay b/c I know that degree will pay off in the end. It may seem boring now, but its worth the extra $10,000 a year. Look at prospective schools. See if they offer financial aid. Go to the library and do your research on careers and schools. Visit campuses and talk to the different departments. Find out what you need to do and where you need to go. It's never too late to start learning. You might even try community colleges. Don't overlook anything and don't get despaired.

also, you might want to delete some of the messages you have. Your inbox is full.

Thanks for the reply! I am deleting PM's now. I got a lot to look into!

Since you'd need to get your basics out of the way for any major, you'd have at least a year before you needed to pick a major. If I were you, I'd go to a local community college or university and ask to speak to a career counselor and/or someone in admissions. If you decide to go back, good luck! School can be a lot of fun.

Thanks! I am kinda frozen in the unknown and that is not usually how I am. I find it weird I haven't done this yet.
