We have an inground (this is our 15th season with it). It is a lot of fun for kids, friends, and family as well as us. Does that price include a heater? that will extend your season. Since it doesn't sound like your too fond of the neighbors a fence might be a good thing!
As long as you have an electric vacume to do all the work and have a pool company come and open and close the pool (or just close it since that is more involved) then weekly maintance shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just test water and add chemicals. Any other things that arise, I run to my local pool store they are so nice there.
Not to discourage you, but after our 11 th or so year we had the whole pool redone. From wiring to liner, pump, filter etc. So the initial expense is expensive (ours was over $20,000 back then) the expense doesn't stop there..there is always something in need or that needs to be replaced.
