Should I get a DVC?

To be honest, it doesn't really make sense to go into DVC with a "girlfriend." That's up to the individual though but can cause a lot of issues. Plus, you seem pretty against it as it is, so this should be a no brainer for you. Don't do it!!

I agree with this, although obviously only you and your girlfriend know the long-term plans for your relationship.

Pretty much any real estate purchase needs to be looked at as a long term investment that cannot be easily broken up, as there are significant costs to divesting oneself of unwanted property. One of the many reasons the housing market has melted down so significantly is that people were buying and selling homes quickly, driving up prices and driving down equity (figuring that you lose 5-8% of your home's selling price each time you sell, people had to recoup that by pushing up the prices and even then were coming out of a sale as a wash).

While DVC can be resold, if you want/need to do it quickly in the next few years you're going to probably take a significant loss.

Again, sounds like you've made up your mind, and it sounds like the right decision to me. Good luck!

If you don't want to buy into DVC don't. The DVC is for people that are interested in staying in the Deluxe villas at a lower price over many, many years. It took us 25 years to realize the we would have saved a lot of money if we had bought into the DVC way back when. Now we not only can go for a week to 10 days but sometimes can go twice a year or we can take family members with us. We could never afford to rent deluxe rooms for my DH's family of 11 or my family of 20 w/o the DVC.

This is a great question!!!!

It sounds like DVC's main point is for wanting "deluxe" accomodations.

If you are someone who likes moderate's just fine, this may not be a good deal. Let's look at the math another way:

We stay for 8 nights at CSR: $2622.00 which includes park hopper tickets for 4 at a cost of roughly $1000, so for rounding purposes lets say the actual room charges are $1622.00.

Now, if I was a DVCer (remember not concerned about mod. vs. del. as I am perfectly content in a mod. and this is what we're trying to establish this at), I would pay $600 a year MF. So, now the extra charges, a regular person pays is $1022. For 17 years I can pay this fee before my initial 17K investment fee starts to matter.

Your math is a little bit off.... the amount of time you will get for your points is impacted seasonally and the days of the week (weekend vs. weekday)... so you may actually be able to get more nights for your invenstment than a week....

We actually do already stay a little over a week, 8 nights or 9 depending.
OK< I'll be real generous here and go with 15 years before I see the even mark on the investment. Yeah, nope, I think I'm out. Not meaning to be critical - I just came on this particular part of the board because my husband and I were wondering if this may be something we would be interested in, and we knew nothing about it. Now I know it's not for us. My BIL's parents actually bought in and let each one of their kids use it each year, so for them it's great as a way to give a gift to their children. But, for us MOD people, I can't justify this whim.
