It depends on if you purchase the insurance and need to cancel will they give you cash back? And do the "covered" reasons for cancelling appeal to you?
If you need to cancel most airlines will give you a credit in voucher form to be used within 1 yr. but they usually deduct the "cancellation penalty" from it first. If you paid $200 per person, but they have a $50 cancellation fee per peson than you will have a $150 credit per person.
I would also check with the airline cancellation penalty. Some are as little as $30pp (JetBlue) others are as high as $100pp
I heard that there’s a forecast for an active hurricane season this year, so I would probably buy flight insurance if I were going on a vacation to Florida. From what I read, it looks like AirTran only has a 24 hour window so you may not be able to purchase through them at this point. There are a lot of insurance plans out there that will cover you for the costs of missed flights if your trip is cancelled or interrupted.
Since you may have missed your window to purchase with AirTran you should consider checking out TravelGuard.com. I've heard good things about their services from some of my friends who went through them, plus they have plans in the same price range that cover your air tickets. I just looked up their products page and saw 2 plans that might work for you – Air Ticket Protection and Flight Guard. Check them out!
Consumer Reports says no, but if you do decide to buy trip insurance, check out insuremytrip.com. The site doesn't sell insurance, it just puts all the various companies/policies in one place.

I read that on consumer reports and completely disagree with them!!
There are some instances where you really wouldn't benefit much from it such as a "room only" booking.
They did not give any consideration to:
-if you miss your connection which causes you to either miss your cruise, or if you are unable to get to your all inclusive resort and have to pay for that day even though you are not there.
-also, if you are called home during your vacation....
