Shingles!!!!

First, I get stenosis (arthritis) in my neck last year, a month ago my back goes out (slipped disc) and yesterday I was diagnosed with shingles (on my left side.....remember when I thought I had appendicitis?? )

I'm only 49.......not 89!!!!! Isn't shingles what the "old" people get?? My Mother didn't help when she said one of her friends has it, too!!:o

Let me tell you......shingles can be very painful!!!:(

No disrespect to old people intended here.;)

I'm old, I didn't take any offense.;)

I've heard Shingles can be very painful. I hope you're not in too much pain, E.

I'd tell that PT that he was definately wrong in his diagnosis.:teeth:

Shingles is similar to the Chicken Pox...I do know people younger than 30 who've had shingles.

Fortunately, not me...but I had to hear the moaning and complaining for a week!

My 13 year-old cousin got it not too long ago. She said something about it being caused by stress. I didn't understand how a 13-year-old can be under so much stress though???

My cousin had them and she was only 37 so its not just an "older" persons disease. My mom had them at 55 and then my grandmother who is 88 has had them. They were the most painful for my mother. She had them right under her breast, around her side onto her back.

He certainly was, Shannon!!

Oh btw, you are NOT old, at least compared to my age!!!:D

Suzanne.....the doc told me I could be moaning and groaning for 4-5 MONTHS!! I hope it's just a week......so does the hubby and boys!!!::yes::

My aunt had them...and was out of work for 11 months!! It was VERY painful - so, if they gave you pain meds go ahead and take them.. Don't try to be "brave" about it..

Hope you feel better soon!

I had shingles when I was 17! It's no fun at all!

I had it a few years ago and was left with permanent nerve pain. I was only 37. Did the doctor give you Valtrex? If it's caught early enough this can greatly minimize the symptoms. Hope you're feeling better soon. :)

My friends daughter had it ..she was 7 at the time.

I also know of a child who had shingles!

Kitty, I hope you're feeling back to your self soon! :sunny:

Its been around 2 or maybe even 3 years since my mother had them and every now and then she will still have pains where they were.

Her Dr. also told her that if she had come to the Dr. earlier and they could have caught them earlier it would have been much easier on her. She ended up taking steroid shots daily for about a month and was out of work for over a month.

My dear mother had shingles 3 years ago and she just recently found relief with a combination of drugs to control the pain. Honestly, your age is on your side. Older people tend to have the pain for years (or forever!) 2 of my SILs have had them - one while she was pregnant! Neither of them has had any lasting pain from them. I'm hoping that that's the case for you! ;)

They gave me Famvir but that's more for the rash part.....to keep it from spreading more. Actually the rash isn't what bugs me. The pain in my side can get quite unbearable.:(

Even tho, I hate to see others suffer this(esp some mentioned that are so young) you guys have made me at least feel less old.;) :D Thank you.

Lucky those of you who got meds for shingles, I got them when I was 27 and there was nothing the doctor could give me, there was nothing in the market for them, I had to let it run its course.
My DD also had them 3 years ago ( she was 7 ) , but she was put on meds immediately and she was fine in a few days. I was out of work for a month.

BTW, be happy that you got arthritis last year, I'm 40 and I have had osteo arthritis for the last 15 years.

I would be upset, it's supposed to hurt like hell

My DW had it when she was 26 when her immune system was compromised. My aunt had it when she was run down after caring for my grandparents before they died.

It is nasty and lasts for a few weeks, but the pain lasted for several months for both.

Sending you lots of pixie dust.

David

I got them when I was 30. My resistance dropped because I was going through chemotherapy at the time.

That was fun.

But survivable. ::yes::

I would be upset too. But you aren't old by any means.

hang in there, I think your medicare will pay for that ;)
