Should I be upset by this raise?

Thanks guys. I guess I am just still upset about my review. The money doesn't matter (I mean ever little bit helps) but I would have rather gotten a fair review and no raise at all.

I've made less money every year since 2000, just got out of a meeting yesterday where they are considering a 20% pay cut.

What you should really be angry about is that gasoline prices have risen 100% in the past two years, groceries about 4-10%, heating bills 40- 70%, healthcare over 50%...

but you and everyone else (except the CEO's who more often than not run a company into the ground and then leave with fat million dollar bonuses) might get a 1-3% raise, if you don't have your wages cut or you are fired all together.

So what is wrong with this picture? Is our "economy booming" ? I think not.

between 2-3% is standard and you should be happy with it. Very few people get raises higher and honestly you are fortunate you received a raise.

NONE of us should "feel happy" about a 2-3% raise that doesn't cover basic cost of living increases. We should all be angry as hell.

Why don't you talk to your new supervisor and let her know what your responsibilities were before she came on board and that you would appreciate more challenging assignments and a chance for advancement? She'll never know unless you tell her. :thumbsup2

Edited to add: I once got a promotion to management and a good raise just by asking. Another person in my dept. was ticked off that he hadn't been considered for the position, but I suspect that our manager had no idea he would have been interested.

When you've gone 5yrs without a raise and your household has gotten a 20% reduction in income due to layoffs and no one hiring new positions at the old rate when they had problems finding people to work the tech jobs like in my house - you're not going to be angry about a 2-3% raise because it sure as hell beats the alternative.

Ok, and after you get angry as hell, then what? You go back to work and live with it. :)

I don't know about this----if the OP was doing her current boss' job, and now someone new is in the position, she (the current boss) might feel threatened by this employee. Probably why she is doing nothing but "secretary" (her words) work now. I would lay low, build trust with her, and see how things develop. Obviously the head boss values her, but if her immediate boss can't deal with things, she could make the OP's life miserable and will probably try to get her to quit or be fired. I've seen it happen (and this may not sound pc, but it happens more with female bosses coming in---they can't handle the authority or the threats to their authority). JMHO

We have had several conversations about what my job is and was. She has been nothing but condescending since she started. She thinks that my department can be run by her and her alone with me to do admin stuff. I essentially ran my department by myself for the last year and did it well.

This is part of an email she sent me last week:

My list is long and the things on my plate cannot be accomplished by just one person if they are to be done well and in a timely manner. I trust the diversity and higher levels of responsibility will be a pleasant change of pace.

I am already looking for a new job as I have seen where my position and department are headed.

I'd be upset too for them not giving me the position I was already filling.

But me, they eliminated my position so I could have been fired last week. They moved me to another department, but I've heard rumors and I'm worried.

Good luck at whatever you do.

I didn't want that position. I like what I do and wasn't crazy about directly reporting to the CEO and President. If my job had remained the same and someone who knew what I did gave me my review, I would be happy.
