Should I add on for this reason?

My DH and I have 175 points at the BWV. We have found that the 175 pts are enough for us (no kids) but I am interested in the AKL promo. The AKL is my favorite resort and part of me wants to really own there just because I love the resort. We also LOVE being at the Boardwalk and being close to EPCOT so I would not want to give up that resort. Is it crazy to add on just to make sure that I can book the AKL at 11 months or do you think we would have no porblem at 7 months. We usually travel either the first week in Nov. or the week after Thanksgiving to see the holiday decorations. I don't think that the points would go to waste but my DH fear is that we will be going more often just because we have the extra points. He does not love Disney as much as I do. What should I do? Do you think the AKV will sell out after this promo? Thanks everyone !!!

If you would be happy staying in a savanna view unit, then I see no reason to add on at AKV. It's nearly as large as OKW and after Kidani is finished, IMHO, it will not be too difficult to get rooms there at 7 months.

Probably not what you wanted to hear - but why buy more if you really don't need more?

Another alternative is to rent points for an occasional AKV stay since a rental is not a long term commitment.

Anyone else have any advise for me? I am so torn!!! I would love to own there but I worry that we really don't need the extra points. I was thinking that we would use them outside of Disney but many people say that it is not that easy to book places other than Disney. What about the Disney cruise? Do you think it cost too many points for the cruise. We usually book a cat.5 which I believe is over 200 pts per person, so I would only use pts for one of us and use cash for the other. My Dh also said that he thinks the mf would be a lot each year. It would cost us about $1300.00/year for 275 pts. Part of me feels that DH is right that we have enough pts for one trip a year but part of me just wants to own at AKV. I just love that resort. Maybe we could still go once a year but than stay in a one bedroom instead of a studio with the extra pts. Oh please help me. Thanks everyone!!!!!!:confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Buyng points specifically for cruising is still a bad value.
1) points required for a cruise increases every year
2) You could rent your points and buy more of your cruise with the cash
3) it is a bad investment to buy points just to rent. MF's are half the rental rate so you would be paying $90/point to get possibly $5/year, and get less as MF's increase..

What about adding on only half of what you would use at AKV and then going every other year? Just my $.02! Good Luck!

that was going to be my suggestion, just buy less points

???
Here is why I wrote points 1-3
1) If you see that a cruise you want needs 200 points this year, do not buy a 200 point add-on just to do that cruise every year. Next year, that cruise might need 205 points, a few years down the road it will need 250. you'd have to keep buying more and more points for the purpose of cruising.
2) Current DVC owners with extra points they do not plan on using at DVC, but want to cruise. Usually if you rented your current points and bought the cruise with cash, you would be able to afford a better room or have extra money left over vs just using points to cruise.
3) now you get excited with #2 when you think that you could buy an add-on for the purpose of renting, so you can buy cruises. Also a bad idea. If you took the cash needed to buy DVC and pay the member fees, and instead invested it in as your "vacation account", you would get a higher return, and thus more $$$ to buy more and better cruises in the future vs renting yoru points.

Why not just do a small add-on? We knew we wanted AKV too, but when we found it would not be monetarily feasible to sell one OKW contract to get it, we decided to just to a small add-on so we could have the type of stay we wanted every 3rd year. We figured out how many points that typical stay would be, and then divided by 3. That's how we came up with doing a 69 point add-on. It doesn't make THAT much difference in the maintenance when it's small like that.

OKay, so I should have continued reading before I answered, and I would have seen that you were already given the advice to do a smaller add-on. Sorry.

I just wanted to add that I am always certain we will never have "too many" points. We usually only use our points at DVC, and are just the two of us also. We have 449 points, and use them all!

The current incentive for existing owners is for 100 points, so a small contract would would not be eligible for the current promo. You can get two 50-point contracts and still be eligible and see if that would be too many points for you. If it is, smaller contracts are easier to sell. That being said, I don't think you would have much of a problem with the 7-month window in early November. Early December may be a little more difficult as is a tough time at any DVC resort because of the holiday decorations and the Adventure season pricing.

Thats a great idea !!! I never thought of that. That way we would have a total of 225 pts (175 at BWV and 50 and AKV). I would be happy staying at AKV every other year. I only need a total of 108 for a studio, savannah view. So if we go every other year we could borrow from the Boardwalk pts at 7 months out. Plus the MF would be about $235/year. Maybe my DH would go for this. The only thing is not getting the $8 off a point and the $500 visa card but it would cost us less up front and we could always add on it we want. I know the points would never go to waste but DH has this fear that I would be dragging him there more than twice a year. Thats fine with me but he can only handle so much of Disney. Thank you Thank you !!!

WOW - that many points !!! How often do you go? I could go once a month and never be sick of Disney. Do you stay in a one bedroom or the studio? I am jealous, and I thought 275 pts were too many!! I have to say that I do like the idea of maybe just buying 50 points - less MF and less upfront money and still enough pts to go. Thanks for your advise. I just love these boards !!!!!

Just my .02

I'm kind of in the same boat with thoughts of BLT.

I would hold out and just see if you can have points transferred into your account for AKV trips. AKV will be large when it is finally built and there will be plenty of points out there that you can get between 8-11 months out.

Now, if I could only tell myself the same thing.

If DH doesn't enjoy WDW as much as you, take some solo trips or go with a friend (without him). That way you get what you want, and he doesn't feel "dragged" along! Buying 1/2 the number makes sense, giving you a solo trip every other year if he doesn't want to go along.

northwenald - I have 1140 points. I bought them all as a single mom of 1 son, and now he's an adult so I use the points for my solo trips and the "couple" trips with my boyfriend. Almost all my stays are in studios, too - and although I've rented some to people who asked this year, there have been years when I've used them all myself. 449 points really isn't that unusual at all - many people have that many or more. Lots of people have more than my 1140, too! I just wouldn't want their annual dues though :rolleyes1

I smiled when I read your post because it sounded so familiar. My DH could easily wait a year or two at the minimum between visits versus I could go four times a year! I've usually have a trip planned and am thinking ahead to the next one.

We go anywhere from 1-3 times a year and never for less than a week, but usually 10-12 nights at a time. We also NEVER stay in studios but only 1-2 bedrooms. When we have guests along, we always have a 2 bedroom, even if it's just one person. I don't expect anyone to sleep on a sofa bed unless it's a kid who actually likes to do those things. You know how some kids like to sleep on the floor too? Those kind don't mind the sofa bed!:rotfl:

THANKS EVERYONE !!! DH just said YES to adding on 50 more pts at AKV.    He did not think we needed the 100 pts but I told him about the wonderful advise that I got on this board and he said that was fine to add the 50 pts. I have a call into our DVC guide so I hope I can still get them. If we go in Nov. we would need 108 for the week. Should I buy 55 pts or do you think 50 is enough? I could also book 6 nights and then at 7 months out use some of our BWV pts for that last night. Even 6 nights is not bad. I am so so so excited. I can't wait to hear from DVC. I just want to thank all of you for all your help !!! Everyone on this board is great:love:

Yippie! Congratulations :).

Did you say that you wanted to stay every other year? A savanna view studio in November is 60 points for 5 days and 108 points for a week and in the first week of December it's 56 points for 5 days and 102 points for a week. I think that you would easily be able to do just about whatever you want with 50 points. You may have to stay only 6 days on a few every-other-year trips, but that's not a big deal. If you definitely want to spend 7 nights every time, then 55 points would do it.
