We should have been on our way this afternoon to OKW for Thanksgiving. But we decided to save some money and cancelled. Found out this morning that I-10 is closed since yesterday until at least Sunday, maybe longer, across the swamp between Baton Rouge and Lafayette, LA. Big gas well fire right off the side of the road. I'm sure there is a detour, but make sure you have a map to find your way if you travel that way.

Reminds me of our trip a few years ago when we left right after work for DVC and got routed off I-10 near Slidell because of a big haz mat spill. Got to Mobile after midnight (should have been around 10PM) and then left again around 6AM to get to WDW.

Have fun, Diane and other DVCers. We'll miss you this year.

Thanks, Deb, and I'm glad we don't have to drive! Would you believe it, Dick is talking about driving in March???? He wants to have the freedom of being able to go to "mousesurplus" and see if they still have one of the old Animal Kingdom armoirs! He thinks it would be a great addition to our walkout level family room. It's about a 302+ hour drive from here.

glad you are trying to go an unfamiliar route - but sorry you are missing Thanksgiving at WDW.

Well you are missing a brisk 55 degree morning here in Orlando!

Enjoy your holiday.

Diane -- what is mousesurplus?

I just talked to a friend who had to travel between Lafayette & Baton Rouge this morning. Traffic was being detoured north along hwy. 190. He said traffic was so bad he couldn't even get off at the exit he needed to.
Sorry you had to cancel your trip.

Deb, sounds like it wasn't meant to be. Happy planning for the next time.:thumbsup2

And after you would have made your way around that there was a bad accident on I10 right outside of Mobile where an 18 wheeler exploded, when I left work today to come home to Fairhope it was a mess. Sorry you had to cancel your trip.

Just returned from a drive to OKW. The Louisiana detour isn't all that bad, it added about an hour to the drive.

Eastbound at La Fayette, you take an interstate (don't remember the number) North to US 190, which was the "old road" before I-10. It is 2 lanes both directions. There are a few stop signals, but plenty of gas stations and restaurants along the way if you need to stop. You are then detoured back to I-10 just before you get to Baton Rouge, but a better option is to stay on 190 until you reach 1-110 in North Baton Rouge, get on South bound and you will rejoin I-10/I-12 in five miles.

That would be I-49 that heads north to Shreveport, where we live.

The truck explosion sounds like it was good that we missed that one, too.

My SIL got married in Houston today, so we went there for two days instead. We would have missed her wedding if we had gone to WDW instead.

I think it all worked out for the better.

Sorry you couldn't make your trip. We have some folks from Texas who were hoping to stop to say "hey" on their way across I-10 on Saturday -- but it sounds like they would've been delayed just getting to FL.

We drove through about 11pm Friday night and there was no traffic. It was suppose to open on Sunday, now we here it will not open until 12/4, not sure what traffic we will see on Saturday. Hopefully we will go through during the early hours and not see much!!!

Hey Deb, Hope you had a king bed wherever you stayed... Glad things worked out for the better.
