What do you do with two Disney World skeptics ... Two people who have said on more than one occasion, "Disney sounds like an absolute nightmare?" Why, you pack 'em up, load 'em in the car and drive them to Orlando, that's what you do! And of course you promise the mother-in-law a side trip to Universal to see the WWOHP.
Monday, November 7th
There are just three of us for the WWOHP today. My father-in-law is just not interested. He never has seen one of the films (though by the end of the trip, we will show him parts of "The Deathly Hallows" on DVD and he will be mildly intrigued) and he insists on staying put. Since we were just there in August, the kids are kind of Pottered-out and beg to stay home with Grandpa, too. Besides, their thoughts are on exploring the Magic Kingdom and more importantly, exploring it with their cousins who will be meeting us there later that afternoon. My son, 9, had his Potter fix the day before Halloween when a local library was transformed into Hogwarts ("A Hogwarts Halloween"). I'll post the link, but my son received a wand (way cool and handmade, too), a bag of candy from Honeydukes and was scolded by Professor Snape! Grandpa has a busy morning planned, filled with swimming, the PlayStation 3, cooking eggs and bacon and a nice walk around the condo complex (Windsor Palms), and the kids (who rarely get to see my in-laws) are excited to spend time with him. Of course, you don't have to even ask me if I'll go to the WWOHP. I'll always be in.
We arrive at 8:05 a.m. (I only know because I saved the parking ticket, nerd that I am). We explain to MIL that even though we're early, we still have to wait until the park opens (9:00 a.m.). We meander slowly through City Walk, pointing out various stores and restaurants (many of them not even open yet). My husband laughs when he sees people running toward the IOA gate. I don't say anything because I know it'll only be a matter of hours before he's running toward Big Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain.
Finally, it's 9:00 a.m. The gates open, our tickets are scanned and we're in. My third trip here and this place is really starting to feel like home.
We guide MIL through Seuss Landing and we both have to tell my husband several times to SLOW DOWN AND WAIT FOR US! He is taking his role as Tour Guide way too seriously. I know he's anxious for a ride on FJ, but patience, patience! MIL oohs and aahs over the attractions throughout Seuss Landing, but I notice that she isn't snapping any pictures. I will later learn that she herself was so excited, anxious and nervous about seeing the WWOHP that she couldn't stop and smell the roses just yet. We finally enter Hogsmeade and MIL loses it ... In a good way. She gasps when she sees the Hogwarts Express and the snow on the top of the buildings. "Oh, my God. Oh, my God," she keeps repeating. "I feel like I'm in one of the movies. This is absolutely incredible!"
