Hey all,

Any fishermen/women on the boards who have researched or tried fishing off anywhere on castaway day? Seems like they probably don't allow it and would want you to do the paid excursion. Just figured i'dask in case someone might know something :)

Not sure if they even have a fishing excursion, but you are not allowed to take fishing equipment on the ships.

There's a fishing boat excursion. I can't see them ever allowing shore fishing anyway, the beaches are too crowded.

I have a travel set that can pack inside a suitcase/bag and go pretty well unnoticed (unless they have x-ray machines and can identify a 6-pc rod broken up). I seem to recall them having one (or maybe it was metal detectors) when I went on the Disney Wonder Mexican Riviera trip a couple years back - they for sure confiscated all the cooked fish/leftovers we tried bringing back on board that time haha.

I'll have to consider doing the bottom fishing trip. Unless I find a local on one of the island stops who can take me out - that's actually what we did when we reached port in Cabo on the Wonder. It worked out perfectly too.

Just checking in.... wanted to know if anyone [recently] has tried/attempted fishing *anywhere* from the shore on Castaway Cay. I've read some info where it might be possible if you can find a more secluded place with not as many people (e.g. not the family beach for sure).

Any fellow fishermen out there who have tried recently (w/ or w/o success)?! :)

I've done the bottom fishing but I agree, surf fishing would be next to impossible on Castaway. The bottom fishing trip has been fun the two times I took it. I'll be doing it next week!

Nice! I may consider doing the bottom fishing trip in that case. Pricing seems OK for what it is - $117 for a few hours of catch and release bottom fishing. LOL, out here on the West coast it's $30-40 for a half-day of fishing and you keep what you catch, but this is a Disney cruise (I keep telling myself) :D Plus, I'm sure they wouldn't let you bring you catch back with you either way :P I tried doing this on the Mexican Riviera Disney Cruise a couple years ago. Caught a ton of yellowtail, had it cooked up at a restaurant in Cabo, and tried to bring the leftovers back on. No go... I guess they don't want to be held liable in case people get sick from outside food, etc...

Anyway, I was also considering doing some fishing in Cozumel as we'll have a full day there. Possibly bonefishing with a popular local there (but it seems like a pain to get to where he is) or maybe doing a charter (also expensive). I guess comparing the cost of one of these charters to the CC bottom fishing, the CC bottom fishing ends up not being so bad after all. We'll see...

I was looking at some youtube vids and Google maps and it looks like Serenity Bay is the one to be at for less crowds (since it's an 'adults only' beach). The youtube vids I saw seemed to indicate that this area isn't very crowded at all. I wonder if I'd be able to walk up to the northern-most part of the beach and get a line wet :) The underwater vids people have shot all show quite a few different kinds of fish: barracuda, grouper, etc...

Just a quick update. I emailed Disney Cruise Line support directly to inquire and got this response:

"Unfortunetly, fishing is not allowed from the our beaches, at Castaway
Cay."

That's a shame and too bad :( Oh well, it was worth an ask.

They do x-ray all checked and carry-on baggage. Whether they'd notice a broken-down rod and reel is another matter.

Good reminder. I think I recall this... although last time I didn't bring a rod/reel. they *might* be able to recognize a spinning reel through an X-ray since those would be pretty obvious. But I bet you they'd pass on a low-profile baitcasting reel and broken down 5-pc rod (rod and reel separated off course). Heck, you could probably remove the handle to make it even less obvious. Even on a spinning reel if you're paranoid: remove the handle and the spool and pack those separately elsewhere like in your toiletry bag.

I wonder what they would do though - confiscate it permanently?

My boyfriend is an avid fisherman and last April we chartered a fishing trip from Port Canaveral through Ofishal charters, it was a Groupon, which made it extremely affordable.

Sign up for Groupons for Orlando and you get Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral and fishing charters come up all the time. You can do a charter right before or after the cruise. Great fishing to be had. Or you can shore fish from Jetty Park or the Cocoa Beach Pier for small fees.

Charters though don't require you to have a license, but shore fishing in Florida does.

Thanks castlegazer! We're actually going to be out there for a few days before the cruise, except my wife really wanted to use this time for the theme parks, so we'll be at Disney World and Universal those days. And after the cruise, we'll be flying back to California that afternoon :( Wish I'd have more time before/after to fit in some fishing but from the looks of it there won't be any.
