Shore excursion to Trunk Bay

It's been forever since I've been on the boards! We'll soon be booking our excursions for our Eastern trip and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a shore excursion to Trunk Bay. My DH and I were there years ago, and took a trip over to St. John with a snorkel tour. It was set up through his company, so I don't have the details. We have our own gear, and want to get to Trunk Bay as fast as possible, to relax, and snorkel off of the beach However, things that I have heard are that people don't have enough time if they do the 5 star tour, or the St. John Snorkel tour, 1 1/2 -2 hours isn't enough for me or my DH, DS, and DD!! Any suggestions??

Two years ago, me and my DH went to Trunk Bay on our own. We were one of the first few off the ship. There were taxis waiting right there at the dock to take you anywhere you wanted. We told our driver we wanted to get to the ferry to go to Trunk Bay, and he said to hurry and get in as there was a ferry leaving in a few minutes. It was kind of a wild ride, but sure enough there was the ferry getting ready to leave as we pulled up. On St. John's, there were taxi's waiting there also; we got into the taxi and it was only a 5 minute ride to Trunk Bay. It was so much cheaper and easier than doing an excursion, and we had so much more time to enjoy snorkling. When we were ready to leave, there were several taxis waiting right there to bring you back to the ferry. We were back in St. Thomas in no time, even with enough time to do some shopping. I would recommend going on your own. We are planning to do this again in September...
