You will find prices cheaper than in the U.S., but more expensive than in other parts of Mexico. More importantly, you will not find the selection in Tijuana that you might hope. Most of the shopping in Tijuana is 'trinkets', decorative items, poor quality jewelry, and pharmacies, although there are some clothing and other stores. It also depends on how you are planning on crossing the border....walk, drive your own car, or take a bus. In any case, be prepared. I last went to Tijuana last summer with my son. We walked across on that day. The line, for everyone (bus, walkers, cars) was about 3 hours long to get back. We spent most of our money that day on water. You can also rent bikes on the Mexico side right at the border crossing, just to cross the border with, then you turn them in on the US side. It used to be the bike lanes moved quicker and so people did this. However, since it takes longer to cross now, Border Patrol has slowed that down. I have crossed into Tijuana numerous times. Since 9/11, they have gotten stricter about the crossings. Be certain you can identify your children as your own, and have picture IDs for yourself. Back on track....I wouldn't go to Tijuana just for the shopping. And I wouldn't go thinking you're going to get a true Mexico experience. It's commercialized for all of the tourists from the US. But going to Tijuana can be a fun day.
