Upcoming Cruise in OCtober. Wondering how the shopping in St Maarten vs St Thomas. Not big shoppers but doing the Beach I think in St Thomas and wondering about going on our own for St Maarten. What is going on in port, is it easy yo shop etc like Grand Cayman or Cozumel?

Seems like there is as much or more shopping in St. Maarten than in St. Thomas. When you get off the ship there is a water taxi you can take from where the ship docks into town (there are a couple stops). The dock where they drop you off is right by the main shopping area (front street). There is also a boardwalk and a nice beach right in town.

We just did st Maarten in April. When you get off the ship there is a small little port shopping area with some bars. It was enough for souvenir shopping and only about 5 min from the ship. If you want more shopping you will have to take one of the ferrys to the main shopping district. St Thomas has the same kind of situation, a bunch of touristy shops a few minutes from the ship. There were more shops in st Thomas at the port, so you'll have more to choose from right off the ship.

I preferred the shopping in St. Maarten. Like previously posted take the water taxi to the shopping district. I loved the linen shops.

Shopping is good enough in both ports. For more selection in St. Thomas, you'll need to grab a taxi ($4 per person) downtown. We did that earlier this month and found plenty of what we were looking for, and even took about 30 minutes of the day to freeze our tails off in the Magic Ice bar (indoor ice sculptures, ice bar with a complimentary shot of Cruzan flavored rum).
