I know there are lots of place to consider for insurance, but I'm not looking for names. :) I AM looking for some help in knowing what to look for.

There are so many ways it is worded.

Basically - we are spending a week at WDW before our cruise. I want insurance so that if someone gets hurt or hospitalized (DH had heart attack, my mom falls and breaks a hip, etc.) and we have to cancel, we get our fare refunded.

Also - I want some kind of insurance that if the ship's doctor feels we need to disembark for a higher level of care that we get that care and/or the sick person and one adult can fly back to US.

Can anyone help me know how to look for this in the most streamlined way?

Thank you.

Our party is me, DH, six kids ages 2 - 15, my mom (mid 60s) and sister (41).

Basically, you need to cover "cancellation for medical reasons". And get "medical/evacuation coverage".

Best choice is to use one of several travel insurance comparison sites (google that). There you'll put in the parameters of what you want covered, and they will show you several company's policies that meet your needs for you to compare side by side. The best I've used to insure my trips can't have the link posted here, but another one is https://www.squaremouth.com/.

if you want the policy to cover any pre-existing medical conditions, be sure to purchase the insurance within 14-21 days of making that first payment for your trip in order to get what's called the "medical waiver". definitely read the fine print because the coverage can vary, from covering only the party that's traveling to extended family members such as your parents.

Trip insurance generally is divided into 2 types:

1. Medical coverage- this would cover medical expenses that are not covered by a plan you already have, such as ER visits, emergency dental treatment, visits to the ships doctor, etc. But note that in some cases, you will still be required to pay up front and apply for reimbursement.

2. Trip cancellation/trip interruption coverage - this would reimburse you for any non-refundable expenses in the event that you had to cancel your trip (before departure), or in the event that your trip is interrupted (after departure). Now this doesn't cover all circumstances that might cause you to cancel, only the covered risks outlined in the policy, but in general, it would cover the most common reasons, such as illness, death, or injury to yourself or immediate family members, loss of job due to no fault of your own, being called to jury duty, etc. You can buy "cancel for any reason insurance", but it can be very pricey!

When I'm looking for insurance, I generally see if I can get a copy of the basic policy wording before I even look into quotes, because I want to see exactly what it covers and if I'm happy with it before wasting any more time on it. Some policies are harder to read than others, many being quite vague - I'm really attracted to those that are easy to understand. I look at the total amount of coverage available to make source im comfortable with it, and then I look at the "covered risks" and make sure that there isn't anything missing that I could foresee happening to me. If all is good then I go ahead and get a quote.

For each person what is important to get covered is going to differ. If you have ailing family members that aren't travelling with you, but you are worried may worsen before your trip, make sure that your coverage includes this circumstance. Make sure that your medical coverage is sufficient for where you are travelling - for example I have some coverage through work, but when I travel through the U.S. (I'm canadian), I always make sure to top up my coverage.

I hope this helps in some way.

It can be quite overwhelming, trying to pick the best policy... but if you look at the websites mentioned in a previous post, you can easily eliminate policies based on things like: minimum medical coverage you'd like, how many hours you're willing to wait until lost baggage benefits kick in, if you want primary medical, etc. Pretty soon, you're down to 5 or 6 policies - you can look at the provider's ratings, the premium prices, and pick. Those sites are wonderful.
