Since they stop on the Sunrise Safari so people can take photos, stability/focusing isn't an issue. I typically use my 70-200mm on my full frame Canon 1DsMkII. Anything too long and you will have a problem with the closer animals. The light is dim so plan to set your ISO to 400 at least initially. As you get out into the more open areas, you can probably lower it. Have fun - it is a great experience!
I used that lens on my 30D, and I found the focal range to work quite well. Have fun!
We're going on the sunrise safari when we go in Dec. I'm super excited! Do you think a 70-200mm 2.8 lens will be okay? If not, what do you recommend? I don't have anything with more reach than 200mm, but I can always rent.
The 70-200mm f/2.8 will be just fine. Bring along the 50mm f/1.8, too -- it really is dim light at that hour.

Thanks so much! I'm using a cropped sensor camera (40D), and I was worried about any other the closer up animals. I haven't been to AK before, so I have no idea how close to expect them. My dh will have the s3 though, so we'll always have that to fall back on.
I'm really not loving my 50mm 1.8. I guess I didn't get a great copy, as the images are always soft, esp in low light. I've got an 85mm 1.8 that I could bring though. Unless I break down and buy the 50mm 1.4.![]()
