Shoot-Along Tutorial #1 - Rule of Thirds

Marge - I LOVE this shot!:thumbsup2 I'm constantly taking flower photos (well, not so much now in the middle of winter), and I really need to work on my composition - what a neat angle for a photo! Have to file this away in my brain and hope I remember it come spring!

Thanks Amy!:goodvibes I call that the "bunnies eye-view"! I have several neighborhood bunnies that always nibble a good portion of my garden to the ground each spring!! When things start blooming, I have to get out there fast or the next day everything is gone (especially my lillies!! :headache: )

This is one I took last year or so. As I went back looking through a lot of my photos, I found that when I was shooting macro on plants and such that I tended to use the RoT very often, but on action/candids I didn't. Hummmm... need to work on that.

i like the lighting on this as well as the composition:thumbsup2 .....and i think if it obeyed all the rules( ie no cutting something off in mid whatever it is) it wouldn't be nearly as nice. i really like the way it 'hints' at a field of daisies

I came across a GREAT pic using RoT today! However, I didn't have my camera with me. I was driving along and passed a rather large field with an old, ramshackle barn smack in the middle. This field is odd in that it's surrounded by urban sprawl: new homes, shops, etc....! The landowner must be holding out for the right price. :thumbsup2 I found (in my 3-5 seconds of drive-by time) that if I were to photograph it, applying the RoT, I could get a great shot of the barn and most of the surrounding pasture, giving the illusion of isolation; a really great, rustic shot! But, in reality, I'm a block away from a new office park!

Oh how I WISH I'd had my camera! However, it's in the negative wind chill temps here so I probalby won't be venturing back out anytime soon.....

I just thought it was great that I was THINKING in RoT! I must be getting better!

WOW!:blush:and thank you! I would love for folks to "think" I put that much thought into this shot - but actually, I just got lucky while pulling weeds!!:goodvibes

Thank you Amy! Coming from someone whose work I adore (:worship: ) that means so much! I just have to say that the encouragement of everyone on this board is so awesome! :thumbsup2
Blessings,

Marge...your pic makes me feel like I am looking up after "I have Been shrunk" in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playground.:thumbsup2

Here is one that I really like from our last WDW trip. The fireplace in the lobby at the Wilderness Lodge.

Nice one...Love it. I seem to only do the rule of thirds when i shoot horizontal. I will work on more vertical shots like yours.:thumbsup2

Ok I understand RoT for static or scenery pictures. But what about WDW when I go to take pictures of the kids with characters? While I may take some other pictures, primarily I'm taking pictures of them and a good portion of them are with characters. What applies here? Any examples?

I got lucky on this one I think. It seems to be RoT, except the pelican's flying out of the frame.

And what about this one? I think it's a bit noisy, but I took it before I started spending much time on this board, so I had the ISO set higher than what I probably needed, but I like the picture.

Wow! Those weeds are tall. You might want to get out there a bit more often. :rotfl:

:lmao: Actually, I'm just really short!!!:rotfl2: This is TRUE!! I'm barely 5 foot -and hey, we get some big weeds here in Ohio!!! Nice fertile soil where we are, and the fact that it was once a horse farm doesn't hurt either!!!:goodvibes

I just posted this to the CB Picture of the Day thread and realized it was in the ROT. Of course, this is how I took most of my pictures on that particular day. ;)

This is my daughter and brother-in-law in Clearwater, FL, on Super Bowl Sunday last year...

What if you crop this one vertically all the way on the left side?
I was just curious, went ahead and tried it.

I really like the cropped version above - the angle of the light is very nice!:thumbsup2
