"Shoes" on the water slides allowed...?

I'm talking about Vibram Five Fingers or a similar water shoe - something that is tight on the foot and won't slip off - not a regular shoe.

In the past, I've worn sandals and have had to take them off and hold them. It's not a huge issue, but I'm lazy and I'd prefer not to do have to deal with it, if at all possible.

I was asked to take off and hold my aqua socks. I heard it's so they don't "catch" on the slides.
