I am trying to pack for a 4 night cruise in a carry-on. My things all fit just fine, but I am worried about having 4 or 5 pairs of shoes in my carry-on since people have to take shoes they are wearing off to go on the conveyor belt through the scanner. Will I have to take shoes out of carry-on? Should I pack them on top so they will be more visible and easier to take out if needed?

Your shoes will be just fine in your carry-on. No need to worry about how you pack them.:)

You will not need to take your shoes out of your carry on.

The carry on will go thru the "xray" machine to look for things that can't go on the plane (or bombs).

The only reason they have you take off your shoes is they need to go thru the same scanner as the carry on.

does that make sense?

Enjoy your vacation. ;)

Oh, it's silly, all right -- not the question, but the whole TSA policy on it.

Ever since the "shoe carnival" policy started, I had made it a point when traveling with kids to have all of our shoes off and placed in our carryons when we entered the security line, so as not to have to deal with taking them off and putting them back on; just one less thing to deal with. About 8 months ago, we had done this per our usual routine, when a TSO looked at my toddler's feet and asked,

TSO: Where are her shoes?
Me: In the carryon bag.
TSO: Well, you can't do that. You'll have to get them out and put them through the scanner in a separate bin.
Me: I'd be happy to, but the carryon bag is on your side of the scanner.
TSO: Well, I'll let it pass this time, but you can't do that -- we have to separately scan her shoes. ... Wait, where are your shoes?
Me: Same carryon bag, also on your side.
TSO: <sighing> Ma'am, you really can't do that; we are required to scan your shoes separately. In the future, keep them with you and put them in a separate bin.
Me: What about the other pairs?
TSO: What other pairs?
Me: The three spare pairs of shoes that are also in that carryon.
TSO: No, we don't need to separately scan those, just the ones that you are wearing through the checkpoint.
Me: O-k-a-a-y. (searching her face for traces of irony and finding none.)

Really, is that not the most ridiculous thing that you've ever heard? What on earth would stop you from switching shoes once you got airside?

You'll have no problem. I usually travel with only a carry-on, so of course there is a pair or two of shoes in there.

Maybe they just want to make sure you wear shoes thru the airport?:confused3

God only knows the germs lurking on the floor around the security area from all those feet,,,,,nasty

We're healthy; a bit of dirt doesn't bother us. I hate wearing shoes, and I've gone barefoot outdoors all my life whereever possible; an airport floor is the LEAST of what I've walked in over the past 48 years, so I'm not concerned about that.

Besides, it didn't matter to them when I took the shoes off; the point, as far as TSA was concerned, is that I sent them through the scanner inside a suitcase instead of directly on the roller belt. If that is really important, then it follows that it would be important for ALL of ths shoes inside the suitcase, but they categorically told me that it was not. (I've also run into differing TSA opinions on whether the shoes need to be in a separate bin or in no bin at all; they can't make up their minds on that, either.)

The lack of logic in that absolutely boggles the mind, and AFAIC, stands as proof that there is absolutely no practical purpose for putting shoes through the scanner separately.

NotUrsula, I am with you. The people who work at TSA are a bunch of bozos. Rent-a-cops, really. TSA is a joke and the joke is on us.

:rotfl2: :worship: Well done!

You don't seem to understand that the shoes in the carry on have gone through the scanner, just as the shoes you put in the bin did. What difference does it make if you change to another pair of shoes which have been scanned?

Actually, you've just reiterated my point.

TSA is insisting that scanning the shoes-worn-to-the-airport inside the bag is insufficient; that they cannot see them well enough, so they are requiring you to put them out on the belt separately so that they can get a good look.

If that is true, then shouldn't ALL of the shoes you are carrying be held to that level of scrutiny?
