About 15 years ago I broke my ankle in 3 places and had to have surgery that resulted in 9 screws and a plate which I never had removed as the doctor said there wasn't any need to. Now I have found out that I have arthritus in that ankle which can or cannot cause pain depending on whenever it feels like it. On my last few trips to Disney of course it started to act up and somethimes I would just be limping for several hours (Thank God for beer at Disney, used for medicinal purposes of course) Besides medicine that I was prescibed (Mobic, which I refuse to take after reading all the warnings on it)I was told to invest in a really good pair of walking shoes. Any suggestions, I always get my shoes at K-Mart!!

New Balance and one of their insoles. I swear by them, I have plantar fascitis and Morton's Neuroma.I thought I had foot problems, but you take the cake. Don't fall over of the price, it is worth having at least one really good pair shoes. Also go to an actual New Balance store, the sales people are more knowledgable and trained than a goofy teenager at Dick's or Finishline. They will even take this cool print of your foot to determine what type of shoe will be best for your arches. You can also go to the store get some advice and select the style you are looking for and shop for it online at a lower cost.

Hey there! Oh man, am I feeling your ankles!! I broke an ankle in high school pretty badly, then this summer fell, broke the OTHER ankle and badly, TERRIBLY sprained the old break. Needless to say, I now have that same arthritis.

I just wrote a longer response on another thread on this same board.. but basically, you'll have to have at least one pair of really good shoes. They are going to cost you, but as the previous poster said, it's completely worth it.

I used to wear New Balance and fell out of love with them. I now love Chacos, Keens, Dansko and Birkenstocks. You'll need something with what is considered anotomical foot support in order for your ankles to align correctly. There are even some crocs that have it.

Good luck! You'll find something!

I know there are New Balance shoe stores in Chicago but where do I go for the other ones you mentioned? I see they're online but I would think that I need a "real" person to diagnose what is really needed. Thanks again for all your help!!

I broke my ankle in December and we're going to WDW in June. I have an ankle brace that I'm supposed to wear for physical activity. I'm trying to decide if I should wwear it in the parks or if it will just be a pain...? Any suggestions? :confused3THANkS!

You can go to the company websites for the specific brand. There you can find something on the order of find a store. I've found that REI, Sports Authority, Nordstrums all carry some of the brands such as Keens, Dansko, Merrells, and Burkenstocks. Each carry different styles. We also have a Burkenstock store in the mall.

You said it yourself, it's for physical activity. You definitely should take it for all the walking you're going to do.

I have had a ton of foot problems. . .my podiatrist recommends Asics and Brooks. You should go to a quality shoe store that has a podorthist who watches you walk in them. It really makes a big difference!

I have plantar fascitis and Morton's Neuroma too! What model New Balance do you wear? I'm still trying to find the right shoes for this. I have a pair of Nikes that are almost right but don't have enough arch (I have a medium arch). I'm going to try a pair of Ecco sandals at the park - if those fail me it's back to the Crocs or the Nikes to get me by.

OP, best of luck finding a shoe. I agree with santa's surpriz's advice. A good pair of shoes will cost you, but I look at it as an investment in my health, since co-pays, injections, insoles, Advil, prescriptions, etc add up.

I have plantar fasciitis and just recently purchased Superfeet insoles for my shoes. I went to their website and found a store near me. They put different insoles in my shoes and had me walk around the store to decide which one was the best for me. I have been using them for about a month and my feet feel the best they have in years.

One thing I can't do without . . . even more so when walking a lot, is my foot stretcher (It actually gives your calf a really good stretch) It is called a step stretch and you can get it @ www.footsmart.com

You can also go to new balance website and send them a e-mail asking what shoe do they recommend for your foot problems

Wear the ankle brace! I made the big mistake of not doing this very thing after an injury. I sprained my ankle really bad a few years ago - two weeks before our WDW trip. The doctor wanted to give me an air cast to wear, but I was too stubborn and refused to wear it. Needless to say, all that walking on the injury kept it from healing correctly. (And gave me INTENSE pain. Halfway through the trip, I had to have it wrapped at the MK first aid - it had swollen up so bad, you couldn't even see my ankle at all.) Because I walked on it so much when it was still a problem, it ended up giving me daily problems for over a year and still occasionally acts up. I wish I would have just listened to the doctor.:sad2:
