Shoebomber files suit on harsh conditions
*************************************************
DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) -- "Shoe bomber" Richard Reid has sued U.S. prison authorities for imposing harsh conditions including isolation and a lack of access to Arabic language religious books.

Reid is serving a life sentence for attempting to use explosives in his shoes to blow up an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami three months after the September 11 attacks.

Reid, a British citizen, wants a judge to order prison authorities to give him "the same rights and privileges as other inmates held in this prison."

Reid has been at the Administrative Maximum Facility in Colorado, popularly known as Supermax, since February 2003.

In May, a federal prison official told Reid U.S. authorities had ordered special administrative measures to restrict Reid's access to mail, media, telephone and visitors.

"These measures have been imposed because there is a substantial risk that your communications or contacts with persons could result in death or serious bodily injury," the official wrote.

In the handwritten suit, filed in U.S. district court in Denver on Wednesday, Reid said he has a window he cannot see out of and is denied access to broadcast and print news.

This makes me want to puke. Here is a guy that tries to blow up a Boeing 767 enroute from Paris to Miami with 200+ passengers.
He is mad that he didnt get to go to "paradise" to be with his virgins. Now he sues to get his prision conditions lightened up.
He brought this on himself in his attempt to detonate the bombs.

If it were up to me, he would never see natural light again. I could maybe see giving him a Koran to read, but he doesnt deserve any other access.

After he had at them once, wouldn't they cease to be virgins making the whole point of his little paradise with virgins pointless?

Or do they just ship in a new batch of virgins every few days?

I don't get wacky beliefs. :confused3

And in all seriousness :

ITA. It makes me mad how some people use our legal system to whine about things. This guys lucky he is alive and has a roof over his head and food to eat. That's more than a lot of people who are a lot BETTER than him have.

Thats what I think too.

Maybe they should let him out of the solitary confinement. See how the other prisoners treat him. We would probably hear of another lawsuit by him saying we didnt do enough to protect/isolate him from the general population.

I often wonder this myself.

What an idiot!!!! Why is he still alive?!!! What a jerk.:sad2:

My understanding of Supermax is they are let out for exercise, one or two at a time, for an hour a day. Otherwise they are in their cells. I think they are all in solitary cells, I couldn't say for sure.

Sorry, I was basing my idea of prison off of "OZ" that was on HBO.
They had solitary confinement and they had Gen Population.
I figured it was like that.

Supermax sounds like he has it too easy. After all, he has a roof over his head, he is fed 3 meals a day. Thats all he is entitled to if you ask me. I seriously doubt this guy is going to be rehabilitated and be an good citizen after he was deported. Of course, Id prefer if he was out of the US and in someone else's prison so our tax dollars arent paying for him to live.

He is really lucky to be alive. Im surprised someone on the plane didnt beat him to death. I would have been very tempted to. I wonder how that would have played out. Would the people who subdued him and killed him been tried or would it have been considered self defence.

Sort of OT, but hearing about this lowlife again reminded me of something. Back on the DB, there was a looong debate about the Geneva Convention, and whether bums like Reid were entitled to POW status.

In his trial, Reid tried to claim he was an "enemy combatant" at war with us, and as such the court had no jurisdiction over him. But the judge sentenced him to life without hope of parole, and at the sentencing hearing he said:
We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect.

Here in this court where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals, as human beings we reach out for justice.

You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier gives you far too much stature. Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, you are a terrorist.

And we do not negotiate with terrorists. We do not treat with terrorists. We do not sign documents with terrorists.

We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.

So war talk is way out of line in this court. You're a big fellow. But you're not that big. You're no warrior. I know warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders.
No one's ever said it better!
