Shocked at what parents send kids for lunch!

But Fruit Loops, oh my, Fruit Loops. My one great weakness. Did you know if you crush Fruit Loops and snort them the sugar works faster???

I'm a Fruity Pebbles gal myself.

The buzz lasts longer. :teeth:

I dont' use wonderbread

Okay, I wasn't trying to insinuate that EVERYONE uses Wonderbread. I know they don't. But it is a HUGE seller so someone is buying it. I would say that *most* of the kids I see at my son's school are eating white bread. Is it Wonder or some other brand, who knows. It could be "white wheat" which is what I buy. But a lot of people are using Wonder white, slapping some sliced deli turkey on it, and they think it's fine. My argument is that it is no better than the Turkey and Swiss Lunchable I saw in the store.

Well I tried the Cocoa Krispies at work one day, but the brown dust around my nose gave me away. It looked like I was trying to get a promotion or something!

Cindyluwho--I like your kitchen. I bet you can cut and snort the Loops up well off those granite countertops.

We buy Wonder bread. (why do I feel like that is some sort of deep confession, LOL?) We also buy Rye, Wheat, Pumpernickel, Pita bread and tortillas for sandwiches.

PAW--I used to think so highly of you... :snooty:

:rotfl2: Thank you Christine. I posted that picture due to another thread about countertops in the kitchen. Ours are granite on the island and copper on the cabs. The copper scratches when I cut the Fruit Loops on it....but the granite does work well.

Back to the OP- Yes, I am shocked by what kids bring not only on field trips - but everyday to school.
My DD's Kindergarten teacher flat out told the parents at orientation that she would VERY MUCH appreciate it if we would make our kids lunches and not let them eat in the cafeteria. There is no way it could be better than we can send.
My 6YO and 9YO fix their own lunches. It consists of:
Fat Free turkey on whole wheat bread w/ Colby Jack cheese, Honey Mustard and fresh spinach leaves. Fruit or carrots w/ lite ranch and a bottle of water. They love this!
My DD brought home a Butterfinger candy bar for me one day. I asked her where she got it and she said there was a girl that had one every day(!) and sometimes got tired of it and gave it to my DD. Yikes!!
Barring sensory integration issues - I agree w/ the statement that they can eat what they are given.
When my oldest DD was 4 I was complaing to her Dr. about her eating habits and he casually asked when did she start driving? I said "Huh?". He said I assume if she is not driving you are bringing these foods to the house that she is eating. Oops! Busted!

Maybe I should clarify my OP...

I never said I was going to the administration or something should be done about it. I never even said the parents should change their behavior. I never said one thing to a parent at the school.

I'm sorry if I came across as being on a "high horse;" That was never my intention.

I was just shocked, and was sharing my shock. I just had no idea that parents let their kids drink pop and eat candy bars for lunch. I wanted to know if this was a normal american culture thing.

I guess it is and I got my answer.

And again, I did not know about the special treats on field trip day. I never remember my mom doing it and just had no clue. I also never said that my kids don't get treats or chocolate Easter bunnies.

Feel free to feed your kids all the junk you want, no argument from me.

I honestly think...reading back through all of my posts that many of you overreacted and called me names that really had no basis in reality based on my posts. I feel like people are putting words in my mouth and putting me on a side of an argument that I don't really belong on.

I TOTALLY agree!
I remembered something else. When my DD was about 2-3 she was in daycare. There was a girl that every single morning ate those white powered donuts and a Diet Coke. Here was my DD w/ her banana and her orange juice. That child now is quite chubby- go figure :guilty:

Looking at the picture in your signature...is that a litter box in your living room? Ewwww.

your child went to daycare? OMG what a bad parent to let other people raise your child.

Is it fun being judged? :confused3 You judge other people rather well.

l.
It looks like a cat carrier to me

Yah...it looks like a crate for crating a pet....a very good thing to have in a living room!

Litter boxes don't have cage like doors, at least not the ones I've seen. As for the picture, I love the puppy and kitty in the picture.

I don't see too much judgment on this thread. Maybe a little but not enough to get upset about. Besides, I don't really care what other people think about what I feed my son for lunch. I know that he's healthy and that's all that matters.

Field trips are generally the only time my kids get lunchables. Usually for field trips, our teachers request the kids bring completely disposable lunches, so they don't need to carry a lunch box all afternoon. Lunchables are a simple way to accomplish this.

However, that being said, as a special education aide, I am consistently appalled at the lunches some children bring. An adhd kid doesn't need a 1/2 dozen cookies, hostess cake and a Pepsi in his lunch, thanks. Likewise, the child who can't stay awake needs more than a mayo sandwich and water.

(*Just a note I addressed the mayo sandwich child as I thought it maybe a monetary issue in the home, turns out the child goes in spurts of what he will eat and refuses to eat anything else. About 3 weeks later he was on white milk and pb&j. I had the social worker and principal discuss with the parent too, because I couldn't stand the thought of the child consuming this each day.)

The OP may not have gone to anyone official about what she saw but this special ed AIDE did though.
